We could not be happier with the services Valerie provided! She is very thoughtful and knowledgeable and provided significant guidance to support our daughter's speech development outside of our scheduled sessions. She established … More a great working relationship with her, and she will definitely be missed! Your business model is amazing and it was an absolute pleasure working with Valerie. I've referred your organization and Valerie to the Executive Director of our daughter's school and friends/colleagues who are in need of speech therapy services.

Samantha Dalmas was fantastic! We saw her for a feeding therapy evaluation and while she doesn’t think my daughter needs more feeding therapy sessions at this time, but she gave me lots of tips to try. We had a very positive experience with Alissa as a tutor for our pod of 5th grade boys from January - June 2020. She cared a lot about the boys and worked hard to create meaningful activities for them. The pod experience was invaluable … More for all of our families during a difficult year and we were so grateful to have found this partnership! We also want to appreciate Craig for helping to match us with a tutor on very short notice after we had cycled through a few folks who were not able to see the commitment through. Thanks for sticking with us!
  • Avatar S CL ★★★★★ 3 years ago
Dusty was the exact person we needed to help our child finish out the school year. So grateful to him for the way he steadily encouraged her and helped her stay on track and organized. He is flexible, responsive to our needs/schedule as … More a family, and a delight to be with. We are also thankful that Craig at Themba Tutors really "gets it" and partnered us with such a wonderful tutor who was a great fit for our girl.
  • Avatar Nicole May ★★★★★ 3 years ago
My child worked with Gillian D virtually for math enrichment. She is an excellent teacher. She took time to understand my child's specific learning style and provided tools that would be engaging. She was kind and empathetic- really … More made it her goal to connect with my child and build trust and rapport. My child started the school year with confidence and without the typically "brain-drain" that occurs over the summer, thanks to Gillian.

Craig and the rest of the Themba team do such an excellent job picking and choosing Themba tutors that suit each client's … More individual needs! I look forward to meeting new tutors and clients in the 2021-2022 school year!

Our son started in a new high school, 100% remote, and was really struggling with Latin and Physics. I found Themba Tudors online and had an initial call with Craig, who was very knowledgeable, responsive, and found 2 amazing tutors for … More us. Both the Latin and the physics tutors were fantastic, connected with my son really well and helped him go from 'failing' grade to 'honors'! I will for sure continue using (and recommending!) Themba Tutors. Thank you, C, K, and W!

Giulia Mercuri is a great Italian tutor! She was very responsive and accessible. Giulia put a ton of effort into preparing for each session and really helped our son with test preparation and projects. As an adult student diagnosed with a learning disability during grad school, I knew I needed help dealing with my Master's program's demanding workload. I was seriously considering dropping out when I was referred to Themba Tutors. … More I was paired up with a wonderful tutor, Julie, who was a total lifesaver. I learned many techniques that I can utilize in the future as I embark on the next phase of my career.
I can wholeheartedly say after working with Themba for two years that I would not have finished my program without this organization. And I am so thankful I selected them.

We were introduced to a wonderful tutor: Mcedwyn. He and our son, a freshman in college, worked well together. As a result, our son’s grades significantly improved. The tutor taught our son subject content and various methods to effectively … More study for quizzes and exams. Our son was also taught time management and organization. My son’s experience with the tutor made the first year of college a less intimidating experience.

We have been with our tutor, Cailin Schiller, for two years, from 5th - 7th grade. She started as an executive functioning tutor with my daughter. From the start, she demonstrated a depth of expertise and a selective use of techniques skillfully … More adapted to my daughter’s ADHD and Math disability. Cailin made Math accessible and understandable to her in a way that even her teachers had not been able to do. She differentiated reading, writing and math tasks and assignments to tailor them to my daughter’s unique learning differences. Not only did it have an effect on her grades and her work efficiency, but she finally could do her work with less anxiety. Even my daughter’s teachers used Cailin’s guidance to modify their work with her. But most importantly, she became my daughter’s favorite resource. I can’t say how invaluable Cailin has been to my daughter’s progress and well-being. I’d recommend her a million times over. She is a gem.

We were very lucky to have found Edwouine Swift, my son's therapist through Themba Tutors. Thomas is 12 years old, and it is extremely difficult to get him to write. Edwouine just works her magic with him, he adores her and is so … More eager to follow her guidance. I have no doubt she will be a positive driving force in his academic future.

1:1 ADHD COACHING FOR K-12 (ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL) STUDENTS

best 1:1 ADHD Coaches for K-12 (Elementary, Middle & High School) Students | FREE remote CONSULTATIONS & remote MEET-AND-GREETS WITH OUR STAFF | WE do at-home visits throughout:

New York City (NYC), Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Boston, Long Island, Westchester, Connecticut (CT), New Jersey (NJ)

Are you struggling to find the right support for your child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)? Many families wonder how specialized 1:1 ADD/ADHD coaching can transform a student’s experience from elementary school through high school, including for boarding students.

Our executive function coaching supports students from elementary through high school by teaching practical, research-based ADHD coping strategies such as creating effective schedules and workspaces, building a reliable organization system, managing sensory needs, strengthening communication, and developing the 13 executive function skills for academic success. In addition to ADHD support, we offer AuDHD tutoring and coaching, designed for students who experience both attention regulation and neurodivergent learning differences. We also provide specialized in-home and online ADHD and executive function coaching for middle and high school student-athletes.

Many students with ADHD struggle in virtual or hybrid classrooms, which is why we offer targeted academic coaching for hybrid learning environments .

Executive Functioning and ADHD in Action

Executive functioning skills—such as working memory, planning, emotional regulation, and problem solving—act as the brain’s management system. These skills rely heavily on developing frontal lobe control, which continues to mature throughout childhood and adolescence. For many students with ADHD, activating executive functions requires significantly more effort.

This often shows up as difficulty with task initiation, inconsistent follow-through, restlessness, or avoidance of challenging work. Some students experience ADHD and indecisiveness, feeling stuck when deciding how or where to begin—even when they understand the material.

This short video from the University of Central Florida illustrates this difference clearly. Although it appears to show two different students (due to different t-shirts), it is actually the same child. When watching an entertaining video, the child is calm and still. When asked to engage executive functions during a math lesson, his body becomes restless. This contrast helps families understand why students with ADHD may appear inattentive during demanding tasks—even though they can become hyper focused on preferred activities.

According to recent research, Americans check their phones an average of 352 times per day—roughly once every two minutes and 43 seconds.

Our executive function coaching is tailored to each student’s self-regulation style. For students who struggle with sustained focus, we strengthen listening skills and encourage healthy habits such as physical movement breaks. For students with stronger self-regulation, we teach how to use intentional digital breaks to maintain productivity without burnout.

We also help students recognize early signs of overload and manage emotionally dysregulated symptoms—such as frustration, shutdowns, or emotional outbursts—before they interfere with learning.

We also teach students how to manage distractions effectively , so they can eventually maintain focus without relying solely on software blockers or external controls.

Digital Tools That Support Executive Functioning

The digital age offers many tools that can enhance executive functioning when used intentionally. We regularly recommend:

We also teach students about the four types of attentional focus —divided, alternating, sustained, and selective—each essential for improving productivity and task completion.

How ADHD Coaching Supports Academic & Emotional Growth

ADHD coaching provides personalized ADHD coping strategies that help students harness their 12 ADHD superpowers while addressing challenges such as hyperfocus and differences between the ADHD brain and a neurotypical brain.

Coaching also supports study skills development and addresses the unique needs of girls with ADHD. Without proper support, the effects of ADHD in school can be especially challenging. Families can also implement effective social skills strategies to support emotional development.

It is equally important to understand differences such as ADHD vs. ADD and the four ADHD symptoms that can lead to perfectionism.

Practical Strategies for School Success

By focusing on everything you need to know about ADHD, coaching equips families with actionable tools such as:

Beyond academics, ADHD coaching addresses behavior and self-regulation by teaching how to build good habits, break bad habits, apply strategies for ADHD and boredom, and develop effective systems for managing ADHD at school. Families can also explore the 10 most common 504 accommodations and additional accommodations that support student success.

ADHD coaches specialize in strengthening executive functioning skills that help students manage multiple responsibilities, stay organized, and maintain focus. These coaching skills are essential for providing meaningful academic ADHD support and helping students build strategies that carry over into daily school life.

TESTIMONIALS

I own a tutoring / educational consulting company myself.. I called to ask for help with my daughter who has sensory, adhd related issues. The woman on the phone was very honest with me and really guided me in the right direction. Most of the other companies I had called didn’t seem to understand what “multisensory” learning style means which is fine, but I’m assuming they wouldn’t understand my daughter’ learning needs. I wound up getting better services through my daughter’s school, but I’d recommend Themba to any parent with a child with special education needs.

Dr. Tamara provided great support to my 11 year old son with ADHD. She worked with him on morning and evening routines. She was professional and relatable and he bonded with her, allowing her to use their relationship to teach him “en vivo” as well as additional tools to help my son work through some socialization issues. He learned a lot and has benefited from her support. We may reach out at a next developmental stage if needed and hope she is available, but trust that Craig would find another good fit for our child if not. Craig listened carefully at intake, asking the right questions and later checked in to ensure things were going alright. A positive experience, highly recommend Themba Tutors.

Jacob has been such an integral part of Maya’s success with improving her organization and executive functioning. He partnered with us when Maya was just diagnosed with ADHD in 7th grade. Jacob gave us the support Maya needed through middle school and the application process for high school. Jacob is was very patient, creative, and encouraging to Maya. Without his help, we would have had a much more difficult road ahead of us. Maya is now transitioning to high school in person as a freshman.

-Melissa S.

Qi did a great job with my 14-year-old with ADHD. She helped her prioritize and pace herself to avoid becoming overwhelmed. Without her, my daughter probably would not have turned in some big pieces of homework at the end of the school year. I wish we had started with her earlier. Qi was calm and upbeat, and had lots of different strategies to try.
