What is the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP)?

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBD) is designed to provide students the skills and understanding they need to successfully navigate the complexities of the world around them and to equip and prepare them to take action. They give a disciplinary, cultural, national, and geographically diverse education that encourages critical thinking and stimulates new ideas and meaningful relationships.

Offered to individuals aged 16 to 19 years old, IB programs allow students from around the world an opportunity to access a variety of academic courses and learning opportunities. The programs highlight conceptual learning and organizing ideas that are applicable across subject areas. This allows for seamless integration and coherence in the IB curriculum

The International Baccalaureate Organization offers diploma programs made up of six main course groups. Students who are interested in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme  must complete three core requirements aside from passing the exams for each subject. These core requirements are:

Extended Essay (EE) A 4000-word research essay discussing and investigating a subject from the list of approved EE topics. The chosen topic may or may not be part of the subjects the student is currently studying.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) – The Theory of Knowledge course is considered the flagship element of the IB’s Diploma Programme. It introduces students to theories about the nature and limitations of knowledge and allows them to test and determine the validity of knowledge through critical thinking.

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) – As its name suggests, this course is geared at providing students opportunities for personal growth, self-reflection, and intellectual, physical, and artistic challenges through social or community work, athletics, and creative projects or activities.

A full IB diploma requires students to take six subjects from the IB’s six subject groups. Out of the six subjects, three to four must be completed at Higher Level (HL). The six subject groups are as follows:

Group 1: IB Studies in Language and Literature – These courses are offered in the student’s native language (up to 80 languages are available), which hopes to promote genuine lifelong interest in language, literature, and human expression. The courses include Literature, Language and Literature, and Literature and Performance.

Group 2: IB Language Acquisition – A more rigorous language course, which also offers Latin and Classical Greek. Students can choose from three subjects to suit their interests and prior language study experience. The three subjects include modern languages for beginners, standard modern language, and classic languages.

Group 3: IB Individuals and Societies Each course is designed to help students identify, analyze, and evaluate theories, concepts, and arguments related to the nature and behaviors of individuals and societies. This subject group includes humanities and social sciences courses, such as Economics, Information Technology in a Global Society (ITGS), Philosophy, and Social and Cultural Anthropology, to name a few.

Group 4: IB Sciences In this course, students explore the fundamental concepts, theories, models, and techniques that underpin each subject area, gaining a better knowledge of the scientific method in the process. Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Design Technology, and Computer Science are offered at both Standard and Higher Levels, while Sport, Exercise and Health Science, Nature of Science, and Environmental Systems and Societies are given at Standard Level only.

Group 5: IB Mathematics This course aims to help students acquire mathematical concepts, principles, and knowledge and encourage critical and creative thinking as well as hone abstraction, problem-solving, and generalizations skills. IB Mathematics courses include Mathematical Studies, Mathematics, and Further Mathematics.

Group 6: IB The Arts – Each subject of this course is designed to help students comprehend the dynamic and evolving nature of the arts, explore its diversity across time, location, and cultures, and express themselves with confidence and competence. Students can choose from five subjects at the higher or standard level. These subjects include visual arts, dance, music, and film.

Ethan was very happy with the sessions and I could see his increased confidence in Math classes at school. Ethan’s grades were generally improved in his IB maths assessments and his MAP percentile ranking increased from 78 to 87%. During this time, Ethan missed 2 of his 5 school Math classes each week for tennis training. Sam provided the math support we needed at home to cover the curriculum but also worked well to fill gaps in his knowledge from previous years.
