We had a very positive experience with Alissa as a tutor for our pod of 5th grade boys from January - June 2020. She cared a lot about the boys and worked hard to create meaningful activities for them. The pod experience was invaluable … More for all of our families during a difficult year and we were so grateful to have found this partnership! We also want to appreciate Craig for helping to match us with a tutor on very short notice after we had cycled through a few folks who were not able to see the commitment through. Thanks for sticking with us!

Dusty was the exact person we needed to help our child finish out the school year. So grateful to him for the way he steadily encouraged her and helped her stay on track and organized. He is flexible, responsive to our needs/schedule as … More a family, and a delight to be with. We are also thankful that Craig at Themba Tutors really "gets it" and partnered us with such a wonderful tutor who was a great fit for our girl.

My child worked with Gillian D virtually for math enrichment. She is an excellent teacher. She took time to understand my child's specific learning style and provided tools that would be engaging. She was kind and empathetic- really … More made it her goal to connect with my child and build trust and rapport. My child started the school year with confidence and without the typically "brain-drain" that occurs over the summer, thanks to Gillian.

Our son started in a new high school, 100% remote, and was really struggling with Latin and Physics. I found Themba Tudors online and had an initial call with Craig, who was very knowledgeable, responsive, and found 2 amazing tutors for … More us. Both the Latin and the physics tutors were fantastic, connected with my son really well and helped him go from 'failing' grade to 'honors'! I will for sure continue using (and recommending!) Themba Tutors. Thank you, C, K, and W!

As an adult student diagnosed with a learning disability during grad school, I knew I needed help dealing with my Master's program's demanding workload. I was seriously considering dropping out when I was referred to Themba Tutors. … More I was paired up with a wonderful tutor, Julie, who was a total lifesaver. I learned many techniques that I can utilize in the future as I embark on the next phase of my career.
I can wholeheartedly say after working with Themba for two years that I would not have finished my program without this organization. And I am so thankful I selected them.

We were introduced to a wonderful tutor: Mcedwyn. He and our son, a freshman in college, worked well together. As a result, our son’s grades significantly improved. The tutor taught our son subject content and various methods to effectively … More study for quizzes and exams. Our son was also taught time management and organization. My son’s experience with the tutor made the first year of college a less intimidating experience.

We have been with our tutor, Cailin Schiller, for two years, from 5th - 7th grade. She started as an executive functioning tutor with my daughter. From the start, she demonstrated a depth of expertise and a selective use of techniques skillfully … More adapted to my daughter’s ADHD and Math disability. Cailin made Math accessible and understandable to her in a way that even her teachers had not been able to do. She differentiated reading, writing and math tasks and assignments to tailor them to my daughter’s unique learning differences. Not only did it have an effect on her grades and her work efficiency, but she finally could do her work with less anxiety. Even my daughter’s teachers used Cailin’s guidance to modify their work with her. But most importantly, she became my daughter’s favorite resource. I can’t say how invaluable Cailin has been to my daughter’s progress and well-being. I’d recommend her a million times over. She is a gem.

What Is Pre-calculus?

What Is Pre-Calculus?

As its name suggests, pre-calculus is the math course taken by students in high school or college to prepare them for calculus. Instead of involving actual calculus concepts, pre-calculus focuses on algebra, trigonometry, math analysis, and analytical geometry. Delving deeper into these subjects is meant to prepare students for calculus and equips them with the foundational skills that the course requires. Learn how you would know if your child needs a math tutor.

PRECALCULUS FINAL EXAM REVIEW

Pre-Calculus and Trigonometry

Trigonometry is defined as the study of angles and triangles, including their dimensions and relationships. It is one of the main math courses that students take in high school and college. Because pre-calculus involves solving and graphing problems using standard trigonometry functions, such as sine and cosine, trigonometry is a pre-requisite for students who are about to take a pre-calculus course. During the course, students will also encounter additional topics like vector operations, sequences, and series.

Pre-Calculus and Algebra

Just like trigonometry, mastering algebraic concepts and skills is necessary when taking pre-calculus. In fact, many math teachers and experts would say that a firm grasp of algebra is the key to a student’s success in calculus. In pre-calculus, students will work on quadratic, exponential, polynomial, and logarithmic functions. Learning to graph functions is particularly important since graphs figure prominently throughout calculus. Likewise, pre-calculus also covers the domain and range of functions, together with finding the intervals over which a function increases or decreases and performing transformations on a function.

Here are some helpfulĀ lecture videos with hands-on, interactive problem solving for all areas of math for ages 10 and up to master essential skills.

Is Pre-Calculus Difficult to Learn?

A pre-calculus course in high school is not difficult. It is a more tedious version of algebra, where you deal with complex fractions and decimals and do more advanced factoring. You will learn new topics such as the long division of polynomials and the remainder theorem and limits. Here are 9 useful study techniques for excelling in Calculus.

But because pre-calculus studies concepts from algebra, trigonometry, and geometry, it can be overwhelming for students to master and memorize all the materials. It is even more challenging for students who do not have a strong understanding of the pre-requisite subjects. In fact, even though they are familiar with the concepts introduced in pre-calculus, they may still find it difficult to navigate, especially if they are not adequately prepared to tackle more complex content. LearnĀ how to teach a child with math learning disabilities.

What Are the Prerequisites for Pre-Calculus?Ā

To take a pre-calculus class, students need to have studied the following concepts and skills that are divided into six categories.

Renaming Expressions

Base ten number system; arithmetic with decimals, fractions, signed numbers; set notation (interval, set-builder, union, intersection); basic vocabulary (e.g., the phrases ā€œat leastā€ and ā€œat most,ā€ nonnegative, integers, consecutive); percentages; unit conversion; scientific notation; factoring; radicals; exponent laws; polynomials; matrices; complex numbers; completing the square technique; long division of polynomials; and logarithms.Ā

Ā Solving equations and inequalities in one variable

Linear; quadratic; absolute value; exponential; logarithmic; radical; systems; rational; compound inequalities; and the zero factor law. Understand extraneous solutions and when they can arise. Be sure that you can distinguish between exact and approximate solutions. You should understand the relationship between the algebraic and graphical solutions of sentences.Ā

Graphing sentences in two variables

Familiarity with these ā€œbasic modelsā€: y = x , y = x 2 , y = x 3 , y = |x| , y = √ x , y = 1 x , y = k , y = ln x (and other bases) , y = ex (and other bases). Be able to graph circles and lines. Be able to graph transformations of the ā€œbasic modelsā€ involving: horizontal and vertical translations, vertical scaling; reflection about the x-axis; absolute value transformation. Be able to handle compound sentences that use the mathematical words ā€˜and’ and ā€˜or.’

PRE CALCULUS 3

Basic Geometry Formulas

Perimeters of common figures, including the circumference of a circle. Also, know the following formulas: AREA: rectangle, triangle, circle, trapezoid VOLUME: right cylinder (with familiar base)

Functions

Function notation; domain and range; composition; piecewise-defined functions; quadratic (y = ax2 +bx+c and y = a(xāˆ’h) 2 +k forms); higher-order polynomial (relationship between the zeros and factors); exponential and logarithmic (allowable bases, shapes of graphs); rational (asymptotes, end behavior, puncture points); and periodic (sine and cosine).Ā

Calculator Skills

Key expressions using correct knowledge of the order of operations; store and recall named variables; use stored values in calculations. Graph functions: set the window; trace along a curve; find maxima/minima of graphs; find x-intercepts using the built-in calculator feature; use the table feature; use the Zoom In, Zoom Out, and Z-Box features; and find intersection points of graphs.

Themba Tutors was recommended to us by a therapist I used to evaluate my daughter, a 7th grader in a public school in Manhattan, for possible learning disabilities related to math. She needed help with strategies for completing homework and keeping skills up to date, and also some remedial work to get her where she should be especially with the challenging Common Core curriculum. My daughter had used a few tutors in the past, but none of them were as effective as Matt. Matt has a very kind way about him and his genuine concern for my daughter s progress was apparent. He was able to focus her attention on the full sessions without her feeling stressed or overwhelmed. He adjusted the agenda to accommodate problem areas that arose and to address extra last-minute material that needed to be reviewed for upcoming tests. Her final report card reflected a 90 for the school year we couldn’t have been more thrilled! Matt has a real gift for teaching that significantly contributed to her getting on track. Thank you for recommending Matt!

Jordan tutored our son in 7th grade math. We had a wonderful experience with Jordan. He was knowledgeable, always on time, and came up with some good strategies for our son to tackle difficult math concepts. Our son has a nonverbal learning disability so working with him can be somewhat challenging at times. But Jordan was always up to the task!

-Anne S. Ā Ā

My son has been working with Jeffrey for math tutoring with brilliant results. Jeffrey helped reinforce the lessons from class, helping him build confidence and perseverance. Jeffrey worked diligently to prepare for each session by making sure he was aware of what material my son was covering each week. Jeffrey would arrive for sessions with problem sheets they could work from to strengthen his skills. He was always very patient, reassuring, and encouraging. While at the same time, he pushed Oliver toward mastery of the material. In six months, my son began to see himself as a capable, successful math student.
