The sessions are going very well. Lilly has a great background in cognitive remediation which I believe has been very helpful in being able to address how my son is picking up on concepts. She has also given him additional tools that he can utilize in between sessions. I am not always present for the sessions. However, when I am I have picked up how she makes sure to verify that my son is understanding the material. She asks him to think out loud on how he would intuitively address the problem which is really important since inferential reasoning is not my son’s strength. Tutors in the past didn’t often catch this nuance. He needs to not just learn the steps but develop an understanding of why it makes sense (from his perspective). I am really very happy with the experience and I know my son is very happy with the experience.

So far we’ve had some really good sessions. Mackie has provided feedback after each session about ways we can try to work with Owen’s unique way of thinking and learning. He also has been in touch with Owen’s teacher and school psychologist to share their respective experiences to formulate an approach that is supportive and encouraging from many angles.

Owen runs outside when he hears that Mackie has arrived and I know that he enjoys the time with him.

Phill has been terrific. So far, he has met with our boys twice during our scheduled weekly meeting. My 13 year old son worked with Aaron on Math throughout 8th grade and we are so pleased with what they were able to accomplish together. B had always seen himself as good at math and was placed in honors math for 7th grade but had a hard time keeping up, was diagnosed with ADHD (turns out he hadn’t been retaining or absorbing much that year) and put back in “regular “ math for 8th grade. We knew he needed to shore up fundamentals and restore confidence/mojo as a math student. Aaron helped Billy get caught up on the fundamentals he’d been fuzzy on and get a solid handle on each building block as the Algebra got more complex. He read through Billy’s diagnosis report to better understand the learning differences and executive functioning challenges he was working with and tailored his teaching style to include coping strategies to encourage less impulsivity, more attention to detail/review, etc.

Aaron was also very easy to work with – always flexible and following up sessions with helpful summaries and reminders and encouragements for Billy. Highly recommend!

Working with Jordan was an extremely positive experience for our family. I contacted Thema Tutors with deep concerns about my son. This incredibly book-smart teen is an extremely disorganized person whose grades suffered due to a lack of organizational skills. My son was responsive to Jordan’s suggestions and methods of organization. They worked through using a planner, calendar, alarm clock, and other methods and systems to help plan for each week. Most importantly, Jordan was a voice of reason (someone other than the nagging mother) to instill the importance of organization and task initiation. Understanding why this was so important was a huge step in moving forward and seeing progress. After a few months of working together, Jordan and I agreed that my son was ready to work independently on his executive function skills. I also learned some helpful tools and tips, and we will continue monitoring the situation to see if we need Jordan’s assistance in the near future. We are grateful for the organizational support he provided us. Grades are now all up. I am grateful that my son has learned lifelong skills to set him up for lifelong success.

Our son started in a new high school, 100% remote, and was really struggling with Latin and Physics. I own a tutoring / educational consulting company myself.. I called to ask for help with my daughter who has sensory, adhd related issues. The woman on the phone was very honest with me and really guided me in the right direction. Most of the other companies I had called didn’t seem to understand what “multisensory” learning style means which is fine, but I’m assuming they wouldn’t understand my daughter’ learning needs. I wound up getting better services through my daughter’s school, but I’d recommend Themba to any parent with a child with special education needs.

Working with Jill at Themba Tutors for the past year has been life-changing! As a dyslexic adult, I’ve struggled for years with decoding words, which has created many challenges in social environments and work.
