Are you a parent navigating the challenges of supporting a child with ADHD? Perhaps you’ve been searching for effective strategies and personalized support to help your child thrive academically, socially, and personally. You’re not alone. Children of children aged 2-17, about 9.4% have been diagnosed with ADHD, with a higher prevalence in boys (12.7%) compared to girls (5.6%). In young adults aged 18-24, the prevalence of ADHD is around 5.05%, but it decreases with age. ADHD significantly impacts academic and professional life; only 0.06% of young adults with ADHD attain a graduate degree, and adults with ADHD face challenges such as a 60% higher likelihood of being fired and earnings up to 33% lower than their peers without ADHD.
Supporting students with ADHD involves understanding their unique needs and helping students to focus at home. Tips include creating a dedicated homework station and using the two-minute rule to combat procrastination. Hyperfocus, one of the 12 ADHD superpowers, can be managed positively with structured breaks and clear goals. Recognizing ADHD in school-aged girls is important due to potential differences in symptoms and the risk of perfectionism.
We understand how the ADHD brain vs. a normal brain informs effective interventions. Managing impulsivity at home includes setting clear expectations. It is crucial to explain ADHD positively to children and incorporate 8 strategies to help a child with ADHD do schoolwork.
In classrooms, interventions like preferential seating and modified assignments support ADHD students: common 504 accommodations and strategies to avoid boredom. My son got to a point in his writing where he just hit a wall with brainstorming. He needed some extra 1:1 time outside of school with someone who could handle the executive functions aspect, the anxiety piece, the extra time/silence my son sometimes needed, and the warmth and creativity that is his native space. Jake was beyond perfect. I just couldn’t have dreamt up a better fit. In addition, he documented his process, what was working with my son, so that I have a collection of emails to look back on when I need reminding about how to help my son when he’s feeling stuck – which is now very seldom. If I had five thumbs, they’d all be up. So I’ll just say, 5 stars! Thank you, Jakek and thank you, Themba Tutors. (By the way, this was affordable, to boot.)
I own a tutoring / educational consulting company myself.. I called to ask for help with my daughter who has sensory, adhd related issues. The woman on the phone was very honest with me and really guided me in the right direction. Most of the other companies I had called didn’t seem to understand what “multisensory” learning style means which is fine, but I’m assuming they wouldn’t understand my daughter’ learning needs. I wound up getting better services through my daughter’s school, but I’d recommend Themba to any parent with a child with special education needs.
Dr. Tamara provided great support to my 11 year old son with ADHD. She worked with him on morning and evening routines. She was professional and relatable and he bonded with her, allowing her to use their relationship to teach him “en vivo” as well as additional tools to help my son work through some socialization issues. He learned a lot and has benefited from her support. We may reach out at a next developmental stage if needed and hope she is available, but trust that Craig would find another good fit for our child if not. Craig listened carefully at intake, asking the right questions and later checked in to ensure things were going alright. A positive experience, highly recommend Themba Tutors.
Jacob has been such an integral part of Maya’s success with improving her organization and executive functioning. He partnered with us when Maya was just diagnosed with ADHD in 7th grade. Jacob gave us the support Maya needed through middle school and the application process for high school. Jacob is was very patient, creative, and encouraging to Maya. Without his help, we would have had a much more difficult road ahead of us. Maya is now transitioning to high school in person as a freshman.
