Are you facing challenges in supporting your child or young adult with ADHD navigating through the educational journey and early professional life in the bustling city of New York? Do you find yourself constantly searching for methods to enhance focus and learning for someone with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) at various stages of their education or early career? Living in New York City can offer unique challenges and opportunities for students and young professionals alike, especially those dealing with ADHD.
As of the most recent data, about 6.1 million children and adolescents aged 2-17 years in the United States have been diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This prevalence includes a significant portion of middle and high school students. Specifically, the age group of 12-17 years accounts for approximately 3.3 million of these cases, indicating a high prevalence of ADHD among U.S. teenagers. It’s estimated that about 16% of college students have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Adults with ADHD face significant challenges in the workplace due to symptoms like distractibility, impulsivity, hyperactivity, poor memory, boredom, time management difficulties, procrastination, and difficulty managing long-term projects. These challenges can lead to communication issues, missed deadlines, and strained relationships with coworkers.
Dr. Len Adler, a prominent figure in adult ADHD research and a psychiatry professor at New York University, estimates that a significant majority, around 75% of adults, are unaware that they have ADHD. This substantial lack of awareness can lead to significant harm for individuals who remain undiagnosed, impacting not only their own well-being but also their families and friends.

My son got to a point in his writing where he just hit a wall with brainstorming. He needed some extra 1:1 time outside of school with someone who could handle the executive functions aspect, the anxiety piece, the extra time/silence my son sometimes needed, and the warmth and creativity that is his native space. Jake was beyond perfect. I just couldn’t have dreamt up a better fit. In addition, he documented his process, what was working with my son, so that I have a collection of emails to look back on when I need reminding about how to help my son when he’s feeling stuck – which is now very seldom. If I had five thumbs, they’d all be up. So I’ll just say, 5 stars! Thank you, Jakek and thank you, Themba Tutors. (By the way, this was affordable, to boot.)
I own a tutoring / educational consulting company myself.. I called to ask for help with my daughter who has sensory, adhd related issues. The woman on the phone was very honest with me and really guided me in the right direction. Most of the other companies I had called didn’t seem to understand what “multisensory” learning style means which is fine, but I’m assuming they wouldn’t understand my daughter’ learning needs. I wound up getting better services through my daughter’s school, but I’d recommend Themba to any parent with a child with special education needs.
Dr. Tamara provided great support to my 11 year old son with ADHD. She worked with him on morning and evening routines. She was professional and relatable and he bonded with her, allowing her to use their relationship to teach him “en vivo” as well as additional tools to help my son work through some socialization issues. He learned a lot and has benefited from her support. We may reach out at a next developmental stage if needed and hope she is available, but trust that Craig would find another good fit for our child if not. Craig listened carefully at intake, asking the right questions and later checked in to ensure things were going alright. A positive experience, highly recommend Themba Tutors.
Jacob has been such an integral part of Maya’s success with improving her organization and executive functioning. He partnered with us when Maya was just diagnosed with ADHD in 7th grade. Jacob gave us the support Maya needed through middle school and the application process for high school. Jacob is was very patient, creative, and encouraging to Maya. Without his help, we would have had a much more difficult road ahead of us. Maya is now transitioning to high school in person as a freshman.
