As one of the world’s most competitive cities, New York City offers a wealth of opportunities to students looking to achieve their academic goals. One of the most prestigious and sought-after tests for admission into specialized high schools in the city is the SHSAT (Specialized High School Admissions Test).

If you’re a student looking to unlock your potential and secure your spot at one of NYC’s top high schools, working with a SHSAT tutor can help you achieve your goals. At Themba Tutors, we specialize in providing expert learning specialists and tutors for SHSAT with the skills and expertise needed to help you succeed.

2023 SHSAT Registration

All New York City residents who are currently in eighth grade or are entering ninth grade for the first time may take the SHSAT. The SHSAT is given only once every year, usually in late October for eighth graders and early to mid-November for ninth pupils.

How Do I Sign Up For The SHSAT Exam?

Logging into your MySchools account is required in order to register for the SHSAT. You can open an account if you don’t already have one.

You will have the choice to order your preferences for the specialized high schools after logging into your account. Make sure you are ranking colleges in the order you would actually want to attend them by giving it some thought.

You will get a unique test ticket with information on the time and location of the test about two weeks following the registration deadline.

Your school counselor can also help you sign up for the SHSAT.

  1. The SHSAT has increased from 2.5 hours to 3 hours. Students are still allowed to switch back and forth between the two sessions at any moment. Only an estimate of 90 minutes for each part.
  1. How many questions will test each math concept is NOT specified. In addition to fractions, decimals, and statistics, students will be required to work out problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. No calculators are allowed.
  1. For the 2017 exam, there will be no fiction reading passages. The DOE may update the exam starting in 2018 to include passages from literature and persuasive writing.
  1. On the revised test, there will only be four possible answers for each multiple-choice question (instead of five).
  1. Although there are 57 items total in each area, only 47 of them are scored. The additional 10 questions in each area are for field tests and are not used to calculate a student’s final score. Which items are field test items won’t be clear to students.
