Dyslexia Research

The purpose of this dyslexia research is to investigate reading and error detection. You are being asked to participate in this study because you are a monolingual English-speaking adult. Your participation in this research is voluntary. You have the right to discontinue your participation at any time.

Activities: If you agree to participate in the dyslexia research, you will be asked to read words, sentences, and paragraphs and follow directional prompts to answer questions related to the content.

Tasks include:
o Vocabulary (Approximately 5-7 minutes in length)
o Reading comprehension (Approximately 10-20 minutes in length)
o Error detection tasks in single word, sentence, and paragraph formats (Approximately 30-45 minutes in length)
o Reading History and demographics questionnaires (Approximately 5-7 minutes in length)

Time expectancy: It is expected that the entire process will take 50 – 80 minutes.

Risks: Risks involved in participating are minimal. The tasks included are similar to reading tasks used in school settings or included as part of daily activities.

Compensation: If you are participating through Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk), after completion of this experiment, you will receive a $5 credit on your MTurk account. If you are participating via a non-MTurk posted flyer or ad, upon completion you have the option to be added to a raffle to win a $50 Amazon.com gift card. Apart from this, your participation will provide insight into the reading process which will support the growth of understanding and practice in multiple fields such as science, education, and psychology.

Confidentiality: All information provided will be kept confidential and only used for purposes of this research. We will record some non-identifying demographic information, your answers, and timing data for all activities. This collected information will not be shared with individuals outside of the research team or referenced once this study has concluded. If provided, your email address will only be used for purposes of providing you with compensation. This study is an online survey run via Qualtrics and is anonymized so that the Qualtrics server does not record identifying information (e.g., username, location, IP address). Instead, Qualtrics will assign an unrelated, individual number to each participant’s results. The data will be deleted from the Qualtrics server at the completion of the study. Before deletion from the server, all results from Qualtrics will be stored as encrypted files on the Principal Investigator’s password-protected computer. Data will not be distributed for further research after the completion of the current study. The data collected will be stored for a minimum of 3 years following the completion of this research and then destroyed.

Investigator Information: If you have any questions, you can contact Gillian Glasser at [email protected]. If you have any questions about your rights as a research participant or if you would like to talk to someone other than the researchers, you can contact CUNY Research Compliance Administrator at 646-664-8918 or [email protected].
