Why Your Child Needs an Exeter Math Tutor

Math can be taught in some pretty creative ways, believe it or not, and private schools are some of the best educational institutions that pioneer novel approaches in teaching traditional subjects. The Phillips Exeter Academy, one of the premier boarding schools in the United States, is a case study in this innovative approach to math instruction.

Teachers at Exeter created a series of math books featuring problems, approaches, and solutions that are currently employed at other private day and boarding schools many years ago. This method has come to be known as Exeter Math, and it’s something that your child can master with the help of an Exeter math tutor. Learn how you would know if your child needs a math tutor.

How Does Exeter Math Work?

What makes Exeter Math truly revolutionary is that the typical classes and course progression of Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and so on are abandoned in favor of pupils learning the skills and computations required to solve problems. Rather than splitting them out into segmented annual learning, each homework assignment combines aspects of each regular math course. Exeter’s math classes are built on math problems written by the teachers. The entire course is problem-centered rather than topic-centered, which distinguishes it from standard math classes.

The goal of Exeter math is to challenge students to think in a dynamic and creative way when solving math problems instead of relying on rote memory. While the traditional math curriculum requires teachers to provide direct instruction and conventional solutions, Exeter math encourages students to use analytical reasoning and exercise autonomy when solving math problems.

Exeter math does away with textbooks and traditional learning materials in favor of math problems developed by their own faculty.. These problems are designed to teach students to be proactive in discovering and applying mathematical concepts, ideas, and techniques. Collaboration is also crucial in Exeter math, as students are expected to discuss with their teachers whatever challenge they encounter and compare and contrast their work and methods with their fellow students.

A typical homework consists of eight to 10 problems that students must solve on their own. They are then expected to share and teach their methods and strategies to their classmates the next day.

What If a Student Has Math Difficulties?

If students are stuck on a problem, teachers recommend that they make an educated estimate and then double-check their work. They accomplish this by inventing a simpler problem based on the same principle as the current one. The following day, students bring their work to class and debate it in a seminar-style setting around a Harkness table, an oval-shaped table invented at Exeter and used in most of their classes to foster interaction. The goal is not merely to deliver the correct answer, but for each student to take turns presenting his or her work to stimulate discourse, exchange approaches, work through problems, discuss ideas, and support other students. In other instances, students also seek the support of an Exeter math tutor.

How Can an Exeter Math Tutor Help?

It is not uncommon for students coming from a traditional math background to feel a kind of “culture shock” when encountering Exeter math for the first time. Students often find themselves grasping for answers and at a loss when suddenly thrust into a situation where they have to rely on their own knowledge and analytical thinking in solving Exeter math problems. This is because traditional math instruction puts emphasis on applying memorized formulas, theorems, or concepts that leave little room for students to conduct their own investigation, exercise critical thinking, and practice self-discovery.

Hence, it’s no surprise that most students struggle with Exeter math, especially when they cannot overcome their frustrations. This is why students who plan to enroll in an Exeter math program or are currently taking it should consider seeking the help of an Exeter math tutor.

An Exeter math tutor can help students navigate the unique challenges that Exeter math presents and identify gaps in content, teach problem-solving strategies, and build skills and confidence.. Aside from this, an Exeter math tutor can:

  • Help students adjust and adapt to a new way of learning math
  • Familiarize students with Exeter math curriculum and content
  • Teach the most efficient methods for solving Exeter math problems
  • Identify prevailing themes in the curriculum and direct the student’s focus
  • Teach students how to organize their work and how to take notes efficiently
  • Develop test-taking strategies that will allow students to properly prepare for exams even without textbook guides

We were very pleased with Samara tutoring service. Lindsay said she really enjoyed working with Samara. Lindsay finished her math class with a B, which is a great tribute to the support and guidance that Samara provided. Lindsay has completed her math requirement and she will graduate this weekend.

We would definitely recommend Samara, especially for any student struggling with math anxiety and/or dyscalculia. Thanks to Samara and you for your help!

This company is great in finding awesome learning specialists who work with kids of all ages and use multisensory techniques to help break down abstract concepts. My child needs help with math and they were able to supply my child with a top-notch math tutor who was able to really help my son improve. Not only is it hard to find qualified math learning specialists who work well with school aged children, but they come to your home, which is a real godsend.

Themba Tutors was recommended to us by a therapist I used to evaluate my daughter, a 7th grader in a public school in Manhattan, for possible learning disabilities related to math. She needed help with strategies for completing homework and keeping skills up to date, and also some remedial work to get her where she should be especially with the challenging Common Core curriculum. My daughter had used a few tutors in the past, but none of them were as effective as Matt. Matt has a very kind way about him and his genuine concern for my daughter s progress was apparent. He was able to focus her attention on the full sessions without her feeling stressed or overwhelmed. He adjusted the agenda to accommodate problem areas that arose and to address extra last-minute material that needed to be reviewed for upcoming tests. Her final report card reflected a 90 for the school year we couldn’t have been more thrilled! Matt has a real gift for teaching that significantly contributed to her getting on track. Thank you for recommending Matt!
