What is the Pandemic Slide? Newsletter – Educators/Parents K-16

TRUST. IMAGINE. LEARN. TOGETHER.
A NEW DESIGN FOR K-16

Welcome to our new Themba e-newsletter
curated for parents and educators of k-16 students. Timely topics of interest and valuable resources for teaching, learning, and supporting all learners.
WHAT’S THE NEW PANDEMIC SLIDE?
It’s the new phrase replacing or adding to summer learning loss. What is summer learning loss? Wikipedia tells us it’s “the loss of academic skills and knowledge over the course of long school holidays … On average, if students are given the same standardized test at the beginning of the long school break and again at the end of that break, they score better at the beginning of summer than after being out of school for several months. Almost all children lose some academic skills during long periods away from school. The loss in learning varies across age, subject matter, and family income. ”
2. From Education Week, check out the Politics k12 Blog, titled ” Former Governor Recruits Stuck-at-Home College Students to Combat K-12’s ‘COVID Slide'”
“As schools closed their buildings in response to the coronavirus pandemic, former Tenn. Gov Bill Haslam saw two big challenges emerging: K-12 students faced the threat of huge learning loss, and many college students with canceled internships suddenly no summer plans.”
“His solution: Recruit at least 1,000 college students to offer in-person tutoring to as many as 5,000 students who will enter kindergarten through 6th grade this fall, helping them catch up on content they may have missed due to lost time in the classroom.”
“The Bill and Crissy Haslam Foundation unveiled the newly named Tennessee Tutoring Corps Tuesday, detailing plans to team up with Boys and Girls Clubs and other youth-serving organizations in a pilot program they plan to evaluate as a possible model for other states.”
3. Finally, here’s your best bet. Go to a teacher who writes annual posts on the summer slide. Hands down, Larry Ferlazzo is on my speed dial to find suggestions for any subject or issue regarding K to 1 2 students and schools.
Larry says “Every year, I create an online virtual summer school “classroom” that my English Language Learner students can use and receive extra credit from me or their other teachers in the fall. And, every year, I share the new list (you can see past ones at The Best Resources On The “Summer Slide” here) .
