We could not be happier with the services Valerie provided! She is very thoughtful and knowledgeable and provided significant guidance to support our daughter's speech development outside of our scheduled sessions. She established … More a great working relationship with her, and she will definitely be missed! Your business model is amazing and it was an absolute pleasure working with Valerie. I've referred your organization and Valerie to the Executive Director of our daughter's school and friends/colleagues who are in need of speech therapy services.

We had a very positive experience with Alissa as a tutor for our pod of 5th grade boys from January - June 2020. She cared a lot about the boys and worked hard to create meaningful activities for them. The pod experience was invaluable … More for all of our families during a difficult year and we were so grateful to have found this partnership! We also want to appreciate Craig for helping to match us with a tutor on very short notice after we had cycled through a few folks who were not able to see the commitment through. Thanks for sticking with us!
  • Avatar S CL ★★★★★ 3 years ago
Dusty was the exact person we needed to help our child finish out the school year. So grateful to him for the way he steadily encouraged her and helped her stay on track and organized. He is flexible, responsive to our needs/schedule as … More a family, and a delight to be with. We are also thankful that Craig at Themba Tutors really "gets it" and partnered us with such a wonderful tutor who was a great fit for our girl.
  • Avatar Nicole May ★★★★★ 3 years ago
My child worked with Gillian D virtually for math enrichment. She is an excellent teacher. She took time to understand my child's specific learning style and provided tools that would be engaging. She was kind and empathetic- really … More made it her goal to connect with my child and build trust and rapport. My child started the school year with confidence and without the typically "brain-drain" that occurs over the summer, thanks to Gillian.

Our son started in a new high school, 100% remote, and was really struggling with Latin and Physics. I found Themba Tudors online and had an initial call with Craig, who was very knowledgeable, responsive, and found 2 amazing tutors for … More us. Both the Latin and the physics tutors were fantastic, connected with my son really well and helped him go from 'failing' grade to 'honors'! I will for sure continue using (and recommending!) As an adult student diagnosed with a learning disability during grad school, I knew I needed help dealing with my Master's program's demanding workload. I was seriously considering dropping out when I was referred to Themba Tutors. … More I was paired up with a wonderful tutor, Julie, who was a total lifesaver. I learned many techniques that I can utilize in the future as I embark on the next phase of my career.
I can wholeheartedly say after working with Themba for two years that I would not have finished my program without this organization. And I am so thankful I selected them.

We were introduced to a wonderful tutor: Mcedwyn. He and our son, a freshman in college, worked well together. As a result, our son’s grades significantly improved. The tutor taught our son subject content and various methods to effectively … More study for quizzes and exams. Our son was also taught time management and organization. My son’s experience with the tutor made the first year of college a less intimidating experience.

We have been with our tutor, Cailin Schiller, for two years, from 5th - 7th grade. She started as an executive functioning tutor with my daughter. From the start, she demonstrated a depth of expertise and a selective use of techniques skillfully … More adapted to my daughter’s ADHD and Math disability. Cailin made Math accessible and understandable to her in a way that even her teachers had not been able to do. She differentiated reading, writing and math tasks and assignments to tailor them to my daughter’s unique learning differences. Not only did it have an effect on her grades and her work efficiency, but she finally could do her work with less anxiety. Even my daughter’s teachers used Cailin’s guidance to modify their work with her. But most importantly, she became my daughter’s favorite resource. I can’t say how invaluable Cailin has been to my daughter’s progress and well-being. I’d recommend her a million times over. She is a gem.

We were very lucky to have found Edwouine Swift, my son's therapist through Themba Tutors. Thomas is 12 years old, and it is extremely difficult to get him to write. TESTIMONIALS

Highly recommend this amazing tutoring service. I interviewed several tutors before finding Themba via a recommendation from our son’s therapist. Craig was so professional and thorough that I was impressed from the moment we first spoke. We are so grateful to have had Alissa’s support this year and could not be happier. She went above and beyond to help Ethan (and us!) navigate through 8th grade, high school admissions, etc. Alissa’s support was a game-changer for our son and we hope to have her assistance next year!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is the TASC exam?

The TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) is a high school equivalency exam designed for individuals who did not finish high school but wish to earn a credential equivalent to a high school diploma. It tests five subject areas: reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. The exam is in computer and paper formats and includes multiple-choice questions and essays. Passing the TASC allows individuals to receive a high school equivalency diploma recognized by employers and colleges in states where it is accepted.

2. What subjects are covered on the TASC?

The TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) covers five core subjects:

  1. Reading: Focuses on reading comprehension and analysis of literary and informational texts.
  2. Writing: Includes grammar, sentence structure, and essay writing.
  3. Mathematics: Covers algebra, geometry, and quantitative reasoning.
  4. Science: Tests knowledge of physical, life, and earth sciences.
  5. Social Studies: Involves U.S. history, world history, government, economics, and geography.

These subjects assess skills equivalent to those taught in high school.

3. What is the difference between the TASC and the GED?

The TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) and GED (General Educational Development) are both high school equivalency exams, but they have several differences:

  1. Subject Areas: The GED covers four subjects—mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning Through Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies—while the TASC covers five subjects, separating Reading and Writing into two distinct sections.
  2. Test Structure and Format: Both exams include multiple-choice questions, short answers, and essays, but the GED places a stronger emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving, while the TASC was designed to be more closely aligned with Common Core Standards.
  3. Availability: The GED is offered nationwide, while the TASC was available in specific states as an alternative to the GED. However, the TASC was discontinued in 2021, so the GED is now the primary high school equivalency test in most places.
  4. Cost and Accessibility: In some states, the TASC was more affordable than the GED, with slight differences in test-taking policies depending on state regulations.

4. Who can take the TASC™ test in New York State?

Test takers had to be at least 16 years old, though those aged 16 or 17 needed additional documentation, such as proof that they had officially withdrawn from high school for at least one year or that their high school class had already graduated.

Additionally, individuals could not have already earned a high school diploma and could not be currently enrolled in high school. Residency in New York State was also required to take the test.

Sometimes, individuals may have needed to complete a TASC preparation program or pass a practice test. Since the TASC is no longer offered, New York has shifted to providing other high school equivalency options, such as the GED, with updated eligibility requirements.

5. Is the TASC exam available online or in person?

The TASC exam was primarily available in person at designated testing centers before its discontinuation in 2021. Unlike some other high school equivalency exams, such as the GED, the TASC did not offer an official online testing option that could be taken from home. All test sections—Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies—were administered under supervised conditions to ensure exam security and fairness. However, with the TASC no longer being offered, most states now provide the GED or HiSET, which may offer online testing options.

6. How long is the TASC exam?

The TASC exam took approximately 7 hours and 30 minutes to complete in total, with the time divided across its five subject areas:

  1. Reading: 85 minutes
  2. Writing: 110 minutes (including a 45-minute essay)
  3. Mathematics: 105 minutes
  4. Science: 75 minutes
  5. Social Studies: 75 minutes

These times included multiple-choice questions and constructed-response sections, such as the essay in the Writing portion. The exam was typically taken over two days, but scheduling could vary depending on the testing center.

7. How is the TASC scored?

The TASC exam was scored using a combination of raw scores from multiple-choice questions and essay responses. Each of the five subject areas—reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies—was scored on a scale of 300 to 800 points.

To pass the TASC, test takers needed to meet two key requirements:

Individual Subject Scores: A minimum score of 500 was required in each of the five subject areas.

Essay Score: In the Writing section, test takers also had to achieve a minimum score of 2 out of 8 on the essay component.

In addition to these individual requirements, the TASC required that the overall score across all subject areas met certain thresholds. Each state had specific passing criteria, but these general guidelines applied across most states that used the TASC. Test results were provided as pass/fail, and those who did not pass could retake sections of the test as needed.

8. Can my child retake the TASC?

If your child did not pass the TASC exam, they could retake it. There were several important details regarding retakes:

  1. Number of Retakes: Most states allowed test takers to retake the TASC up to three times in a calendar year for any subject area they did not pass.
  2. Waiting Period: Some states require a waiting period between attempts, typically 30 to 60 days, depending on the state’s regulations and the specific subject area.
  3. Partial Retakes: If your child passed some sections but not others, they were only required to retake the sections they did not pass rather than the entire exam.
  4. Preparation: In some cases, states or testing centers may have required test takers to complete a preparation course or provide evidence of additional study before retaking the exam.

Since the TASC exam is no longer available, it’s important to check with local education authorities for current high school equivalency testing options, such as the GED, and their retake policies.

9. Can my child take the test with accommodation?

Your child could take the TASC exam with accommodations if they had a documented disability. Accommodations were available to ensure that individuals with disabilities had equal access to the test.

Common accommodations included:

  1. Extended Time: Additional time to complete the test sections.
  2. Frequent Breaks: Scheduled breaks during the exam to accommodate specific needs.
  3. Assistive Technology: Use screen readers, text-to-speech software, or magnifiers.
  4. Scribes or Readers: Assistance from someone who can read the test questions or write down answers on behalf of the test taker.
  5. Alternative Formats: Depending on the disability, the test could be provided in Braille, large print, or audio format.

To apply for accommodations, your child must submit documentation of their disability (such as a doctor’s note or an individualized education plan, IEP) along with their test registration. The testing authority typically reviews and approves the request for accommodations before the exam date.

10. How can students prepare for the TASC?

To prepare for the TASC exam, students should study the five subject areas—reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies—using official TASC prep materials like study guides and practice tests. They can also take advantage of TASC preparation classes offered by local institutions. Practicing time management and taking timed practice tests can help build confidence and improve performance. Themba Tutors provides free practice tests that students can complete at home, ensuring thorough preparation for the TASC.
