13 Jun Summer Reading Accelerator for Middle & High School Students
SUMMER READING ACCELERATOR FOR MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Powered by Readable English® + One-on-One Instruction from Themba Tutors

Limited Summer Enrollment
The Themba Tutors Summer Reading Accelerator is designed specifically for middle school and high school students who read accurately but inefficiently.
Many students understand material when given enough time. The challenge is that reading may still be slow, effortful, inconsistent, or mentally exhausting. As coursework becomes more demanding, these inefficiencies become harder to compensate for.
The Summer Reading Accelerator combines the Readable English platform with individualized instruction from a Themba Tutors reading specialist to help students improve reading efficiency, fluency, stamina, comprehension, and academic confidence.

Build Reading Efficiency, Speed, and Comprehension Before the School Year Starts
Students who improve how they read are often able to:
- Complete assignments more efficiently
- Improve comprehension
- Reduce rereading
- Keep up with reading-heavy coursework
- Increase academic independence
- Build confidence across subjects
This program is designed to strengthen the reading skills that support success in English, history, science, social studies, foreign languages, and standardized testing.
Why Reading Becomes a Problem in Middle & High School
As students enter middle school and high school, academic demands increase dramatically. Students are expected to:
- Read longer assignments
- Process more complex vocabulary
- Handle denser academic texts
- Complete reading more independently
- Manage larger workloads
Many students struggle not because they lack intelligence, but because reading still requires more effort than it should. Common signs include:
- Reading takes significantly longer than expected
- Frequent rereading
- Difficulty completing assigned reading
- Avoidance of reading-heavy classes
- Falling behind despite strong effort
- Difficulty sustaining attention while reading

Who Is This Program For?
This program may be a good fit for students who:
- Are entering grades 5–12
- Read below grade level
- Read accurately but slowly
- Struggle with reading stamina
- Have difficulty completing reading assignments
- Have dyslexia or suspected dyslexia
- Need support with reading efficiency and comprehension
- Are preparing for a more demanding academic year
Minimum Reading Requirement
Students should be reading at approximately an end-of-first-grade to beginning-of-second-grade reading level or higher. Students with dyslexia are welcome, provided they have established foundational reading skills and are able to participate meaningfully in the program. Students who require intensive foundational decoding intervention may be better served through a dedicated reading intervention program.
Included With Every Program
Full Access to Readable English and the Web Reader
All Summer Reading Accelerator students receive full access to the Readable English platform, including the browser-based Web Reader.
The Web Reader allows students to apply Readable English supports to many types of online text, helping them practice reading skills using real-world academic material.
Students may use the Web Reader to:
- Work through assigned summer reading
- Practice with online articles
- Read school-related materials
- Improve fluency using self-selected texts
- Strengthen reading independence outside tutoring sessions
Students may work independently or review their reading during tutoring sessions with their reading specialist. This allows instruction to extend beyond tutoring sessions and gives students opportunities to apply their skills to authentic academic content throughout the summer.
What Skills Are Targeted?
Depending on the student’s needs, instruction may focus on:
- Multi-syllabic word decoding
- Reading fluency
- Reading efficiency
- Reading stamina
- Word recognition
- Reading accuracy
- Comprehension
- Vocabulary development
- Academic reading strategies
- Independent learning skills
As reading becomes more automatic, students are often able to complete schoolwork more efficiently and with less frustration.
