SHSAT is undoubtedly the longest and most demanding test that eighth graders face. Designed to be difficult, only a fraction of the students who take the test annually can secure a coveted spot in one of New York City’s prestigious 9 specialized high schools. The Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT) is required for all New York City resident students in grade 8 and first-time grade 9 students, except for those aiming to attend LaGuardia High School. This includes students from public district and charter schools, as well as private and parochial schools. Additionally, students with disabilities, limited mobility, and those who are English Language Learners (ELLs) are eligible to take the SHSAT.

Themba Tutors proudly offers 1:1 SHSAT tutoring 2023 test prep in-person throughout NYC, Westchester, Long Island, New Jersey, and Connecticut. We also offer remote support as well!

In 2022, out of 27,669 testers, 4,053 eighth-grade students received offers to specialized high schools based on their test scores. The Department of Education reports that this year, 855 students will be participating in the summer Discovery program.

Analyzing the data further, we find that 31% of students who took the SHSAT identified as Asian, with 52.5% of these students receiving offers. Additionally, 1.8% were multi-racial, with 3.9% of these students receiving offers. Native American students accounted for 0.9% of test-takers, and 0.6% of them received offers. Lastly, 17.1% of test-takers were white, with 27.8% of these students receiving offers.

The SHSAT serves as the gateway to New York City’s prestigious specialized high schools, including Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech. These schools are renowned for their rigorous academics, exceptional faculty, and ambitious student bodies. They provide a high-quality education free of charge, making them highly sought-after by families throughout NYC.

The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) consists of two sections: English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. The ELA section evaluates students’ abilities in revising/editing and reading comprehension. In the revising/editing part, students are assessed on their language error identification and correction skills, as well as their ability to improve the quality of a given piece of writing. The reading comprehension part includes six passages, testing students’ understanding, analysis, and interpretation skills.

The mathematics section of the SHSAT focuses on word and computational problems that involve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students may also encounter problems involving fractions, decimals, and statistics.

We strive to provide comprehensive SHSAT tutoring that covers all relevant topics and prepares students effectively for the exam. Our tutors are experienced and well-versed in the SHSAT curriculum and can provide targeted instruction to address specific areas of improvement.

  • 9-11 revising/editing questions, which include standalone questions and a series of questions based on a single passage.
  • 6 reading comprehension passages covering informational, literary, and poetic content.
  • Each reading comprehension passage is followed by 6-10 questions, resulting in a total of approximately 57 questions in this section.

Math Section:

  • Total of 57 questions
  • 5 grid-in questions where students provide their numerical answers.
  • 52 multiple-choice word problems and computational questions.

The Test Length:

  • The total testing time for the SHSAT is 180 minutes.
  • Students have the flexibility to allocate their time between the ELA and Math sections as they see fit.

Scoring:

  • For each correct answer, 1 raw point is awarded.
  • It’s important to note that only 47 questions in each section are scored, while the remaining 10 questions are experimental and do not contribute to the final score.
  • Students are not able to distinguish between the scored and experimental questions during the exam.
