We could not be happier with the services Valerie provided! She is very thoughtful and knowledgeable and provided significant guidance to support our daughter's speech development outside of our scheduled sessions. She established … More a great working relationship with her, and she will definitely be missed! Your business model is amazing and it was an absolute pleasure working with Valerie. I've referred your organization and Valerie to the Executive Director of our daughter's school and friends/colleagues who are in need of speech therapy services.

Samantha Dalmas was fantastic! We saw her for a feeding therapy evaluation and while she doesn’t think my daughter needs more feeding therapy sessions at this time, but she gave me lots of tips to try. We had a very positive experience with Alissa as a tutor for our pod of 5th grade boys from January - June 2020. She cared a lot about the boys and worked hard to create meaningful activities for them. The pod experience was invaluable … More for all of our families during a difficult year and we were so grateful to have found this partnership! We also want to appreciate Craig for helping to match us with a tutor on very short notice after we had cycled through a few folks who were not able to see the commitment through. Thanks for sticking with us!
  • Avatar S CL ★★★★★ 3 years ago
Dusty was the exact person we needed to help our child finish out the school year. So grateful to him for the way he steadily encouraged her and helped her stay on track and organized. He is flexible, responsive to our needs/schedule as … More a family, and a delight to be with. We are also thankful that Craig at Themba Tutors really "gets it" and partnered us with such a wonderful tutor who was a great fit for our girl.
  • Avatar Nicole May ★★★★★ 3 years ago
My child worked with Gillian D virtually for math enrichment. She is an excellent teacher. She took time to understand my child's specific learning style and provided tools that would be engaging. She was kind and empathetic- really … More made it her goal to connect with my child and build trust and rapport. My child started the school year with confidence and without the typically "brain-drain" that occurs over the summer, thanks to Gillian.

Our son started in a new high school, 100% remote, and was really struggling with Latin and Physics. I found Themba Tudors online and had an initial call with Craig, who was very knowledgeable, responsive, and found 2 amazing tutors for … More us. Both the Latin and the physics tutors were fantastic, connected with my son really well and helped him go from 'failing' grade to 'honors'! I will for sure continue using (and recommending!) Giulia Mercuri is a great Italian tutor! She was very responsive and accessible. As an adult student diagnosed with a learning disability during grad school, I knew I needed help dealing with my Master's program's demanding workload. I was seriously considering dropping out when I was referred to Themba Tutors. … More I was paired up with a wonderful tutor, Julie, who was a total lifesaver. I learned many techniques that I can utilize in the future as I embark on the next phase of my career.
I can wholeheartedly say after working with Themba for two years that I would not have finished my program without this organization. And I am so thankful I selected them.

We were introduced to a wonderful tutor: Mcedwyn. He and our son, a freshman in college, worked well together. As a result, our son’s grades significantly improved. The tutor taught our son subject content and various methods to effectively … More study for quizzes and exams. Our son was also taught time management and organization. My son’s experience with the tutor made the first year of college a less intimidating experience.

We have been with our tutor, Cailin Schiller, for two years, from 5th - 7th grade. She started as an executive functioning tutor with my daughter. From the start, she demonstrated a depth of expertise and a selective use of techniques skillfully … More adapted to my daughter’s ADHD and Math disability. Cailin made Math accessible and understandable to her in a way that even her teachers had not been able to do. She differentiated reading, writing and math tasks and assignments to tailor them to my daughter’s unique learning differences. Not only did it have an effect on her grades and her work efficiency, but she finally could do her work with less anxiety. Even my daughter’s teachers used Cailin’s guidance to modify their work with her. But most importantly, she became my daughter’s favorite resource. I can’t say how invaluable Cailin has been to my daughter’s progress and well-being. I’d recommend her a million times over. She is a gem.

We were very lucky to have found Edwouine Swift, my son's therapist through Themba Tutors. Thomas is 12 years old, and it is extremely difficult to get him to write. Reading Tutor NYC | In-Home K–12 Reading Specialists

Best Reading Tutors in New York City Metro Area for K-12 Students | Free Consultations & Meet-And-Greets With Our Staff | We Travel to You!

reading tutors for K-12 students

Strong reading and writing skills shape every part of a student’s academic life. However, many students who appear “on track” still struggle to summarize what they read, sustain attention during longer assignments, and express ideas clearly in writing. Families searching for a tutor for reading and writing are often looking for structured academic support that improves comprehension, written expression, and long-term independent learning skills.

Themba Tutors provides personalized, evidence-based literacy tutoring grounded in the science of reading, supporting families throughout the NYC Metro Area—especially across Manhattan tutoring services, Brooklyn tutoring services, and Queens tutoring services, as well as Staten Island, the Bronx, Westchester, Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Boston.

As the primary reading pillar in our literacy network, this service works in tandem with our master writing tutoring in NYC and English Language Arts tutoring in NYC directories. We also provide dedicated support for adult learners through our dyslexia tutors and coaches for adults program.

  • Goal: Build foundational reading skills, improve written output, foster critical thinking, and establish independent learning habits

Does This Sound Like Your Child?

Many students appear strong on paper—but struggle with clarity, stamina, and execution. Our reading tutoring program focuses on students who:

  • Read at or above grade level but struggle to summarize main ideas clearly
  • Have difficulty sustaining attention during longer reading assignments
  • Understand material verbally but struggle to express ideas clearly in writing
  • Write responses that feel disorganized, vague, or underdeveloped
  • Avoid reading or writing tasks that require deep focus and follow-through
  • Need help building independence and self-reliance when working alone

Experience Structured Literacy Tutoring Backed by the Science of Reading

Our approach reflects deep experience with research-based instruction. The science of reading explains how students learn to decode, comprehend, and engage with text—making it the foundation of our literacy tutoring programs.

Tutors explicitly teach comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and writing skills in a systematic and cumulative way. Lessons help students learn how to summarize complex material, organize ideas logically, and produce clear written responses. Instructors integrate books, short stories, and digital tools—including interactive online reading programs—tailored to each student’s specific developmental level. This structured approach is especially effective for students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, NVLD, and other learning differences.

Why Content Mastery Isn’t Enough

Reading complex literature and expressing analytical arguments on paper require far more than memorizing vocabulary definitions or phonics rules. To succeed in competitive NYC academic environments, students must independently initiate reading assignments, organize evidence, manage multi-week project timelines, and revise their written work objectively.

Our academic execution system connects direct subject-matter reading instruction with the execution routines students need to apply what they know. Rather than treating disorganization, task avoidance, or reading fatigue as isolated skill deficiencies, we help students develop repeatable approaches to text annotation, passage summarization, essay outlining, and time management.

These academic performance systems coordinate subject-matter learning with broader independent skills. When planning, working memory, time management, or task initiation impacts a student’s ability to complete reading and writing coursework, families can explore our comprehensive executive function coaching in NYC to establish a coordinated, systematic coordination approach across all academic courses.

Literacy Tutoring Support for Students, Families, and Schools

Reading-Writing Support for Students and Teachers

We believe literacy growth happens best through collaboration. Our team supports students while also coordinating with parents and educators when appropriate.

Instruction commonly supports:

  • Reading comprehension and main idea summarization
  • Writing organization and clarity
  • Grammar and mechanics
  • Text analysis and written responses
  • Sustaining attention during reading and writing
  • Building confidence as readers and writers

These skills work together to help students become more capable, independent, and engaged learners.

Our Reading Tutoring Service Areas

We provide expert in-person and online reading tutoring across the NYC metro area and beyond. Families choose us because we’re built to meet students where they are—at home, at a library, or online.

We serve students across the following regions:

  • New York City (NYC): Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island
  • Long Island
  • Westchester
  • New Jersey (NJ)
  • Connecticut (CT)
  • Boston

No matter where sessions take place, our approach stays consistent: structured instruction, clear goal-setting, and steady progress monitoring.

Who We Work With

We work with a wide range of students—but a large portion of our families come to us because their child is:

  • Performing at or above grade level but struggling with writing clarity or organization
  • Able to read independently but not able to summarize or explain what they read
  • Losing time due to inefficient reading and writing habits
  • Struggling with focus and follow-through during independent work

Unlike traditional reading intervention programs, our focus is not just on basic decoding—we help students improve academic performance, written output, and independent execution.

High-Impact Reading Tutoring for K–12 Students

Reading demands evolve as students progress through school. Early readers must master phonics and decoding, while older students are expected to analyze complex texts and manage heavier reading loads. Even when students can read, difficulties with comprehension, sustained attention, and written expression can lead to stress, inefficiency, and inconsistent academic performance.

NYC students often face increasing literacy demands as they prepare for Regents exams, AP coursework, and selective high school admissions.

Themba Tutors uses structured literacy—a research-backed approach that benefits all learners and is especially effective for students with dyslexia and other reading challenges. Instruction is explicit, systematic, and cumulative, building foundational skills that last.

We also integrate executive function coaching to help students:

  • Maintain attention during longer reading tasks
  • Organize and structure written responses
  • Manage reading-heavy workloads
  • Build consistency and independence

This is a key difference in our approach—students don’t just improve their reading skills; they learn how to apply them independently in real academic settings.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about working with Jake. One aspect that stood out to me was that he took the time to understand my learning style and catered our sessions towards ways that would work best for me, which I greatly appreciated! Jake was so fantastic and always had a positive attitude. He helped me work on my time management, reading, and organizational skills. I valued how much he celebrated my good grades and all the little wins along the way! Jake was flexible regarding scheduling, which I appreciated during my hectic college life. I am so thankful I had the opportunity to work with him!!

We’ve been so happy to have Themba’s wonderful tutor, Jill, working with our daughter on her reading and spelling. Jill has helped her become more efficient and recognize and remember spelling rules. Jill’s warmth and attentiveness have made it possible for my daughter to connect with her even though these sessions have been entirely virtual. I get copies of the spelling rules to reinforce them at home and some interactive tools to help my daughter build on what she’s been learning. Themba has helped us a ton!

We were happy with Michelle’s services, and Alara had a good year overall—her organizational skills improved, and she showed nice progress in reading and writing. Michelle and her teachers were a key part in helping to make this happen, and we appreciate it. Michelle worked very well with Alara, and we appreciate it!

Jacob was patient and came up with creative, well-informed approaches. Our son connected with Jacob and benefited greatly from their sessions. Jacob also collaborated with our son’s school, often sharing updates and insights. We are very grateful for all of Jacob’s support!

Comprehensive Reading Skill Development

reading tutors for K-12 students

Our tutors design developmentally appropriate reading instruction based on each student’s age, learning profile, and academic goals.

Elementary Students (K–5): Building the Foundation

Young readers build essential early literacy skills through engaging, structured lessons that make reading more automatic, supporting confidence and reducing frustration:

  • Phonemic awareness (hearing and manipulating sounds)
  • Phonics and decoding skills
  • Sight-word recognition and vocabulary expansion
  • Oral reading fluency and phrasing
  • Early comprehension strategies and text-based discussion
  • Building reading confidence and stamina

Middle & High School Students (Grades 6–12): Strengthening Advanced Skills

Older students need strategies that help them manage complex texts, demanding coursework, and long-term assignments across English, history, science, and social studies:

  • Advanced reading comprehension and critical analysis
  • Text annotation and close reading strategies
  • Identifying themes, main arguments, and literary devices
  • Analyzing informational and academic texts
  • Managing long-term reading assignments and multi-step projects
  • Developing study strategies that support reading-heavy AP and honors courses

Preparing for the collegiate execution gap? Transitioning from high school reading assignments to self-directed university research papers, extensive seminar reading loads, and syllabus tracking requires strong independent execution habits. Our tutors help students build these foundational time-management and self-advocacy systems early.
