We could not be happier with the services Valerie provided! She is very thoughtful and knowledgeable and provided significant guidance to support our daughter's speech development outside of our scheduled sessions. She established … More a great working relationship with her, and she will definitely be missed! Your business model is amazing and it was an absolute pleasure working with Valerie. I've referred your organization and Valerie to the Executive Director of our daughter's school and friends/colleagues who are in need of speech therapy services.

We had a very positive experience with Alissa as a tutor for our pod of 5th grade boys from January - June 2020. She cared a lot about the boys and worked hard to create meaningful activities for them. The pod experience was invaluable … More for all of our families during a difficult year and we were so grateful to have found this partnership! We also want to appreciate Craig for helping to match us with a tutor on very short notice after we had cycled through a few folks who were not able to see the commitment through. Thanks for sticking with us!

Dusty was the exact person we needed to help our child finish out the school year. So grateful to him for the way he steadily encouraged her and helped her stay on track and organized. He is flexible, responsive to our needs/schedule as … More a family, and a delight to be with. We are also thankful that Craig at Themba Tutors really "gets it" and partnered us with such a wonderful tutor who was a great fit for our girl.
  • Avatar Nicole May ★★★★★ 3 years ago
My child worked with Gillian D virtually for math enrichment. She is an excellent teacher. She took time to understand my child's specific learning style and provided tools that would be engaging. She was kind and empathetic- really … More made it her goal to connect with my child and build trust and rapport. My child started the school year with confidence and without the typically "brain-drain" that occurs over the summer, thanks to Gillian.

As an adult student diagnosed with a learning disability during grad school, I knew I needed help dealing with my Master's program's demanding workload. I was seriously considering dropping out when I was referred to Themba Tutors. … More I was paired up with a wonderful tutor, Julie, who was a total lifesaver. I learned many techniques that I can utilize in the future as I embark on the next phase of my career.
I can wholeheartedly say after working with Themba for two years that I would not have finished my program without this organization. And I am so thankful I selected them.

We were introduced to a wonderful tutor: Mcedwyn. He and our son, a freshman in college, worked well together. As a result, our son’s grades significantly improved. The tutor taught our son subject content and various methods to effectively … More study for quizzes and exams. Our son was also taught time management and organization. My son’s experience with the tutor made the first year of college a less intimidating experience.

We have been with our tutor, Cailin Schiller, for two years, from 5th - 7th grade. She started as an executive functioning tutor with my daughter. From the start, she demonstrated a depth of expertise and a selective use of techniques skillfully … More adapted to my daughter’s ADHD and Math disability. Cailin made Math accessible and understandable to her in a way that even her teachers had not been able to do. She differentiated reading, writing and math tasks and assignments to tailor them to my daughter’s unique learning differences. Not only did it have an effect on her grades and her work efficiency, but she finally could do her work with less anxiety. Even my daughter’s teachers used Cailin’s guidance to modify their work with her. But most importantly, she became my daughter’s favorite resource. I can’t say how invaluable Cailin has been to my daughter’s progress and well-being. I’d recommend her a million times over. She is a gem.

We were very lucky to have found Edwouine Swift, my son's therapist through Themba Tutors. Thomas is 12 years old, and it is extremely difficult to get him to write. Highly Qualified Educators Serving Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx & Staten Island

Choosing a tutor in New York City is a high-stakes decision. Families need more than subject knowledge — they need educators who understand learning differences, executive functioning challenges, and the academic pressures unique to NYC schools.

At Themba Tutors, we match students with experienced, professional educators who communicate clearly, respect your home, and know how to support complex learners with care and expertise.

Parents often reach out to us asking:

  • “Is this tutor trained to work with my child’s specific learning needs?”
  • “Will they understand ADHD, dyslexia, or anxiety?”
  • “Can someone help with planning, organization, and follow-through?”
  • “How do I know this tutor is truly qualified and trustworthy?”
  • “Will tutoring actually improve daily life — not just grades?”

These concerns are valid — and they deserve thoughtful solutions.
For more than a decade, Themba Tutors has helped NYC families connect with knowledgeable, compassionate educators who deliver measurable academic and executive functioning growth.

We provide personalized 1:1 support across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Staten Island, with remote services available worldwide.

Why Thousands of NYC Families Choose Themba Tutors

Families don’t stay with us by accident. They stay because our approach is personal, research-informed, and grounded in real understanding of NYC learners.

1. Highly Qualified Educators With Advanced Training

Over 90% of our educators hold advanced degrees in special education, psychology, literacy, STEM fields, or related disciplines. Many bring classroom, clinical, or specialized intervention experience — ensuring instruction is both skilled and responsive.

2. Deep Expertise in ADHD, Dyslexia, Autism, and Learning Differences

Our tutors have hands-on experience supporting students with ADHD, executive function challenges, dysgraphia, twice-exceptional profiles, dyslexia, autism, dyscalculia, language-based learning disabilities, and NVLD.

This expertise allows sessions to reduce frustration, build confidence, and support meaningful, long-term progress.

3. True Personalization That Adapts to the Learner

Every student receives instruction that is intentionally designed around their individual strengths, goals, and challenges. Rather than relying on rigid programs or scripted lessons, our educators take time to review school reports, listen carefully to parent concerns, observe learning patterns, and adjust their approach in real time.

Whether a student benefits most from explicit instruction, multi-sensory strategies, advanced enrichment, or confidence-building support, the plan is always tailored to what helps that learner succeed.

4. A Relationship-Centered Approach That Builds Trust

Students learn best when they feel safe, understood, and respected. Our tutors prioritize building genuine rapport, which allows students to open up about challenges, stay engaged, and take academic risks without fear of judgment.

This relationship-centered approach is especially important for learners who have experienced frustration, avoidance, or anxiety around school. As trust grows, students begin to believe in their own abilities—and that confidence carries directly into the classroom and beyond.

5. Expertise in Building Academic Confidence and Executive Functioning

Many students perform well with guidance but struggle when they are expected to plan, prioritize, and manage tasks independently. Our tutors naturally integrate executive function support into academic instruction, helping students develop systems for organization, time management, study routines, and follow-through.

By strengthening these skills alongside academics, we reduce stress for families and help students build habits they can rely on throughout their academic careers—and into adulthood.

6. Flexible, Convenient Support Anywhere in NYC

Every family’s schedule and needs are different. That’s why we offer both in-home and online tutoring and coaching. Our educators travel throughout all five boroughs—Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island—and sessions can also take place online, in libraries, or in quiet study spaces.

This flexibility allows support to fit naturally into your family’s life, rather than forcing your family to adapt to a rigid program.

7. A Proven Record of Measurable, Long-Term Growth

With more than a thousand NYC families served, our results speak for themselves. Students make meaningful gains in academic skills, executive functioning, organization, confidence, and emotional resilience.

Parents consistently report improvements not only in grades and performance, but also in motivation, self-belief, and overall engagement with school. Because our support is individualized and comprehensive, progress is steady, sustainable, and often life-changing.

Together, these seven strengths reflect the heart of Themba Tutors—a team grounded in professional excellence, genuine care, and deep respect for each learner’s unique journey.

Our NYC Legacy: A Decade of Impact and Student Success

Founded in 2012, Themba Tutors was built to address a clear need in NYC education: families searching for qualified, reliable, and empathetic specialists. Under the leadership of CEO Craig Selinger, an Educational Specialist and Executive Function Coach, the organization grew into one of New York City’s leading private tutoring groups.

We work with students from:

  • NYC public, charter, and private schools
  • Specialized high schools
  • Independent and competitive K–12 programs
  • Colleges across New York and nationwide

Our tutors understand New York City’s demanding academic expectations and help students thrive in rigorous learning environments.

Comprehensive Academic Tutoring for K–12, College, and Adults

Our academic tutoring emphasizes mastery, clarity, and independence. Rather than rushing through homework, our tutors help students deeply understand concepts and apply skills with confidence.

Math learners build strong foundations; science students develop critical thinking skills; writers strengthen structure, clarity, and interpretation; and language learners gain practical communication tools.

Adult learners also receive patient, structured support to refresh or advance their academic skills.

High-Impact NYC Test Prep and Admissions Support

Standardized tests in NYC require both strategy and emotional balance. Our test prep tutors help students understand the logic of each exam, manage timing, and build confidence through targeted practice.

Instead of overwhelming students with endless tests, we focus on targeted techniques that help students perform at their best.

Our admissions support provides structured guidance on essays, interviews, and application planning. Students learn how to present themselves authentically and confidently, whether applying to independent schools, specialized high schools, or colleges. For many families, this support turns a stressful process into a manageable and empowering one.

TESTIMONIALS

Themba did a good job matching my daughter with the tutor best able to meet her needs.  Alissa was very good at reframing our daughter’s assignments so that they felt possible instead of overwhelming. She also helped us change our approach so that we provided useful support instead of unhelpful pressure. Her role as a liaison between the school, the student, and the home was invaluable. In the end, our daughter went from failing several classes to getting mostly A-‘s -and most importantly-feeling like she had the self-confidence to carry on independently. We will definitely keep in touch with Alissa. She is fabulous!

I want to say THANK YOU.  Claire has really enjoyed and felt comfortable with your tutoring sessions.  But also—-the RESULTS!  She got an 84 on her Development Psychology final, up from 55 and 65 scores from previous exams.  She (and I) are extremely pleased and feeling good about this!

Working with Jordan was an extremely positive experience for our family. I contacted Thema Tutors with deep concerns about my son. This incredibly book-smart teen is an extremely disorganized person whose grades suffered due to a lack of organizational skills. My son was responsive to Jordan’s suggestions and methods of organization. They worked through using a planner, calendar, alarm clock, and other methods and systems to help plan for each week. Most importantly, Jordan was a voice of reason (someone other than the nagging mother) to instill the importance of organization and task initiation. Understanding why this was so important was a huge step in moving forward and seeing progress. After a few months of working together, Jordan and I agreed that my son was ready to work independently on his executive function skills. I also learned some helpful tools and tips, and we will continue monitoring the situation to see if we need Jordan’s assistance in the near future. We are grateful for the organizational support he provided us. Grades are now all up. I am grateful that my son has learned lifelong skills to set him up for lifelong success.

Executive Function Coaching: The Foundation Behind Academic Success

Executive function challenges can affect nearly every aspect of school. Many students who appear unmotivated are actually struggling with planning, organization, time management, or emotional regulation. Our executive function coaching focuses on practical, personalized strategies that align with each learner’s natural tendencies and daily routines.

During coaching, students build systems for tracking assignments, managing deadlines, organizing materials, and sustaining focus. Coaches help students break tasks into manageable steps, overcome procrastination, and develop habits that support long-term independence. Parents frequently describe the impact as transformative—both academically and at home.

Neurodiversity-Affirming, Research-Driven Support

Neurodiverse learners deserve instruction grounded in respect, dignity, and evidence-based practice. Our specialists use structured, research-informed approaches to support students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, NVLD, autism, and twice-exceptional (2e) profiles.

Instruction is clear, patient, and customized to each learner’s strengths. Students receive targeted support such as structured literacy instruction, visual math modeling, written expression strategies, communication scaffolding, and executive functioning tools. Many families share that their child feels understood for the first time—often leading to stronger engagement and steady progress.

Parent Support That Reduces Stress and Builds Stability at Home

We view parents as essential partners in the learning process. When school routines become stressful, our team helps families create realistic, sustainable structures that promote student independence.

We also guide parents through understanding evaluations, communicating effectively with teachers, and setting supportive expectations at home. Families often express relief knowing they no longer have to manage school challenges alone. With clear direction and ongoing communication, parents feel more grounded and empowered.
