In this workshop, you will explore informative and argumentative essay writing. You will choose topics that are most meaningful to you from today's current events. Here are some examples: Social Justice issues such as homelessness, Black Lives Matter civil rights, the Presidential Election 2020, Science vs politics when making national disaster decisions, pass or fail grading during remote learning, Women, Gender, and LGBTQ+ rights. The class will use resources from the New York Times, Newsela and other national/local archives for background information and primary sources. Skills taught include annotation, paragraph writing, essay formatting/structure, using quotes effectively, and writing style, which are all needed for high school coursework and state exams
Dates: 10 sessions:Tuesdays and Thursdays from May 12 to June 11, 2020
Time: 3:30 to 4:30pm
Cailin is a NYC Department of Education teacher with expertise in Middle and High School English Language Arts (ELA), History and Special Education. At Themba Tutors, she provides support for students with and without learning differences in writing, reading, ELA and History, along with test prep and study skills
