TWICE EXCEPTIONAL 2e

What Is Twice Exceptional?

People not always realize that gifted students can also have a special need or disability. In the same manner, students with disabilities may also turn out to be gifted. We know of children who are exceptionally talented in music or possess a high level of mastery of math, literature, or science. On the other hand, we also meet students who are living with different challenges, such as ADHD, dyslexia, or autism. However, there are also children who fall under both categories. Twice-exceptional or 2e is the term used to describe children who are both gifted and challenged. The Davidson Institute serves profoundly gifted young individuals aged 18 and under. These students are identified as scoring in the 99.9th percentile on both IQ and achievement tests.

Children who are twice-exceptional have a unique struggle. On one hand, some of these children may use their giftedness to compensate for their difficulties. They may deliberately or unconsciously use their talents to hide the struggles they are experiencing in other areas. In other cases, when their disability manifests early on, it can overshadow their giftedness and other talents. Learn more about twice-exceptional and its characteristics.

WHAT IS 2E TWICE EXCEPTIONAL? HOW TO KNOW IF A STUDENT IS 2E?

Craig Selinger, CEO of Themba Tutors, interviewed Micaela Bracamonte, founder of the first 2e (Twice Exceptional) friendly school in New York City. They talk about The Lang School and how it started sixteen years ago when her son was diagnosed as 2e at the age of four. In this podcast episode, they discuss the evolution of the Lang School and how it incorporates social-emotional learning and strength-based approaches, among other curriculums. In the early years, teachers notice students’ talents and nurture them throughout their Lang School careers. For the 2019-2020 school year, the graduate class, all three Lang valedictorians, received financial merit-based college scholarships. The Lang School offers virtual free resources for families.

Often, twice-exceptional children struggle in school, where great emphasis is placed on organization, participation, and long-term planning. 2e students can be extremely creative, verbal, imaginative, and inquisitive. They have strong problem-solving abilities. Many of them have a diverse range of interests, while others are more focused on a single, all-consuming expertise. However, they may also have difficulties keeping up with academic demands. This can lead to inconsistent academic performance, frustration, difficulties with written expression, and labels like lazy, unmotivated, or underachievers. All of this may dampen their enthusiasm for school and harm their motivation, self-sufficiency, and confidence.

Types of Twice-Exceptional Children

Students who are twice-exceptional often fall under three categories. For children who belong to the third category, their learning disabilities can often overshadow their exceptional talents and abilities. As a result, they are often overlooked and unable to fully explore their skills and interests. Stanford Online High School is an exclusive independent school catering to grades 7–12, situated within Stanford University. Their committed instructors assist academically advanced students globally through live, online classes. They prioritize students’ readiness in course placement, emphasizing their abilities rather than solely relying on age or grade level.

The types of twice-exceptional children are:

  • Students who excel early on but later on shows signs of a disability
  • Students with diagnosed disabilities yet show exceptional gifts in some areas
  • Highly intelligent students who appear to be average because of their disabilities

Identifying Twice-Exceptional Children

Determining whether a child is twice-exceptional is very seldom an easy task. Every child has their own skills, talents, and gifts, but they also have their own set of challenges. As such, it is often hard to single out a fixed method for identifying gifted children with disabilities. Children who are twice-exceptional are frequently identified when they show promise in one or two areas. A child with ADHD may find himself or herself struggling with academics, but he or she child may excel in art, creative expression, or problem-solving. Encourage your child to achieve their highest academic potential by engaging in advanced math learning with top educators and peers. ArtofProblemSolvingOnline‘s interactive online math program is designed for students in grades 5–12 and provides a dynamic environment for growth and excellence.

Schools and teachers can spot twice-exceptional students if they notice a change or drop in the child’s school performance. A student may be excelling in class one day and gradually falling behind the next as a result of an unaddressed learning disability. If the student’s grades and classroom participation begin to deteriorate, teachers should investigate to see if there are other factors that are affecting the child’s schooling. Poor eyesight, hearing, and other physical issues can all contribute to poor performance. Learn more about twice-exceptional and its characteristics.

What Are the Common Strengths of Twice-Exceptional Children?

Twice-exceptional is typically observed to be:

  • Highly creative
  • Possessing a good sense of humor
  • Interested in a wide range of topics or hobbies
  • Capable of coming up with advanced ideas
  • Highly skilled with vocabulary
  • Particularly engrossed in a certain talent or interest

If a child possesses a few of these skills but somehow still performs poorly in school, he or she may be twice-exceptional.

What Challenges Do Twice-Exceptional Children Often Face?

When a child is twice-exceptional, he or she:

  • Gets frustrated or annoyed quickly
  • Has an argumentative personality
  • Struggles with expressing himself or herself through writing
  • Handles criticism poorly
  • Is often disorganized
  • Struggles with maintaining effective study habits
  • Is often stubborn
  • Has a hard time socializing or handling social situations

A child who possesses some of these traits, in addition to the above strengths, is likely highly intelligent. However, this is often overshadowed by their behavioral struggles. As such, it is important to remember that 2e students frequently have exceptional abilities, talents, and intelligence. Similarly, they also face challenges that may hinder them from fully exploring their talents and interests. Teachers and parents who believe that a 2e student’s learning needs are not being met in a traditional classroom may consider other approaches, including private, one-on-one twice-exceptional tutoring, to ensure the child’s needs are addressed.

How Do Themba Tutors’ Twice-Exceptional Tutors Help Your Child?

  • Establishing a relationship
It’s important for us to earn the trust of your child because this allows them to be comfortable to ask for help.

  • Considering learning profiles during instruction
Our teaching methods and instruction are largely based on your child’s learning profile. We incorporate their interests and consider their readiness as we introduce strategies and work on activities to make sure that they stay engaged.

  • Collaborating with parents, teachers, and other learning professionals
We work with your child’s teachers and other professionals who are evaluating your child to ensure that we cover all his or her needs. Most importantly, we believe that parents know their child best and can provide the best insight on their child’s behaviors and interests.

  • Remediation
We pay close attention to your child’s engagement and interests. If he or she seems frustrated, it might be dismissed as being lazy in a regular classroom setting. When in reality, he or she may simply require additional guidance or encouragement to overcome the disability.

  • Teaching critical and creative thinking
Explicit strategies such as encapsulation, mind mapping, visualization, questioning, point of view, and analogies engage 2e students and draw on their problem-solving abilities.

  • Communication
In many instances, parents or students themselves can identify the social-emotional causes of academic or behavioral problems. We believe that an open discussion can be a simple yet effective solution.

  • Modifying with technology
For 2e students, having the option to type an essay rather than write it by hand can be a big help. Another option is for the student to record and then playback the recording. Graphic organizers, for example, are a low-tech solution that can help with sequencing, organization, and making connections.

  • Teach organizational skills
A twice-exceptional tutor can assist students in creating study plans, setting up deadline reminders, and analyze how their effort and planning affect the results they want to see.

  • Flexibility
A twice-exceptional tutor recognizes that while 2e students may share some similarities with each other, they are still individuals with unique skills, personalities, and interests. Twice-exceptional tutoring must be adapted to address their specific strengths and weaknesses.

  • Finally, One on One Twice-Exceptional Tutoring
Private tutoring can cover all the solutions listed above. It will give you or your child the highest quality of support and attention needed to ensure success.

At Themba Tutors, we believe that every student and individual is equal and has the capacity to do and achieve great things. Giving them the highest quality of tutoring and coaching support will give them the needed edge to succeed.
