Executive functioning issues can arise as soon as students begin attending school. If your child struggles to stay organized, remember things, complete homework, and complete projects, he or she may have executive function issues. Executive function refers to the cognitive abilities that we all use to analyze tasks, break them down into steps, and keep them in mind until they are completed. These abilities enable us to effectively manage our time, memorize facts, comprehend what we read, solve multi-step problems, and organize our thoughts when writing.
Parents and teachers may notice the following difficulties in students in elementary, middle, and high school:
๐ Behavior or Emotion Management Challenges
๐ Academic Challenges

MEET OUR HUDSON COUNTY, NEW JERSEY EXECUTIVE FUNCTION COACH, MARISA WHO COULD COME TO YOUR HOME

Doctoral Candidate, School-Clinical Child Psychology
Marisa received a bachelorโs degree in Spanish and Psychology from Skidmore college and is a current doctoral candidate in School and Clinical Psychology at Pace University. Marisa has worked in a variety of settings such as community mental health centers, classrooms, and summer camps, and her experiences ranges from working with toddlers to middle-aged adults. During her time in undergrad, she assisted preschool students with ADHD, autism, and learning disabilities in the classroom, helping them navigate peer interactions and ensuring a smooth transition from one activity to the next. As a paraprofessional in a school for students with autism, she has guided high school students of this population to meet various academic and socioemotional needs, such as staying motivated and organized through the use of positive reinforcement and token economy systems.
During her doctoral training as a school psychology intern, she has counseled and administered psychological assessments to high school students of varying learning styles and behavioral challenges, as well as those living with dual diagnoses of anxiety, depression, and personality disorders. This experience was particularly meaningful as she was able to participate in IEP meetings, collaborate with outside providers, deliver feedback to parents, and tailor an individualized academic plan for each student based on unique needs and presentations.
Through her doctoral training in Clinical Psychology, Marisa currently works therapeutically with teens and adults ages 17-50 on issues ranging from test anxiety and college preparation to executivefunctioning tasks such as decision-making, time management, and problem-solving skills with the goal of enhancing self-efficacy and confidence in meeting everyday demands. She applies an empathic and person-centered style to her clients and collaborates with families to ensure a holistic approach to each set of unique challenges they may face.
In her free time, Marisa enjoys taking her dogs for walks, and spending time with family, friends, and in nature, which she finds especially healing. She can often be seen having a lacrosse catch whenever possible or playing soccer with neighbors and friends.
