What Is High School Biology?

From the Greek words “bios” and “logos,” biology is the study of life. It examines, observes, and aims to understand the evolution, origin, structure, function, and distribution of living organisms. In essence, biology is the study of everything because it allows us to have better knowledge and understanding of how living things work and interact with each other and their environment.

Throughout school, students are introduced to biology gradually from the time they enter preschool. In high school, biology expands and explores its connection with other branches of science, such as chemistry, physics, and astronomy. High school biology stresses on the fundamental principles and ideas that link it to other disciplines (such as studying evolution by natural selection and how it relates to molecular biology). As such, high school biology provides the core ideas that students must master before they advance in the science curriculum.

Unlike other high school subjects that require memorization and more straightforward skills, high school biology focuses on critical thinking. Students need to learn how to identify significant details, analyze concepts, and apply them in varied situations. The high school biology curriculum is designed in such a way that teaches students how to think instead of simply what to think.

Here are some helpful lecture videos with hands-on, interactive problem solving for all levels of science for ages 10 and up to master essential skills.

For example, students will extract DNA from a strawberry, observe cells under a virtual microscope, and analyze the effectiveness of enzymes found in different fruits and vegetables. Our  high school biology tutors can even plan a virtual scavenger hunt in the student’s neighborhood to learn about the local ecosystem and design their own photosynthesis experiments.
