She is very thoughtful and knowledgeable and provided significant guidance to support our daughter's speech development outside of our scheduled sessions. She established … More a great working relationship with her, and she will definitely be missed! Your business model is amazing and it was an absolute pleasure working with Valerie. We had a very positive experience with Alissa as a tutor for our pod of 5th grade boys from January - June 2020. She cared a lot about the boys and worked hard to create meaningful activities for them. The pod experience was invaluable … More for all of our families during a difficult year and we were so grateful to have found this partnership! We also want to appreciate Craig for helping to match us with a tutor on very short notice after we had cycled through a few folks who were not able to see the commitment through. Thanks for sticking with us!

Dusty was the exact person we needed to help our child finish out the school year. So grateful to him for the way he steadily encouraged her and helped her stay on track and organized. He is flexible, responsive to our needs/schedule as … More a family, and a delight to be with. We are also thankful that Craig at Themba Tutors really "gets it" and partnered us with such a wonderful tutor who was a great fit for our girl.

My child worked with Gillian D virtually for math enrichment. She is an excellent teacher. She took time to understand my child's specific learning style and provided tools that would be engaging. She was kind and empathetic- really … More made it her goal to connect with my child and build trust and rapport. My child started the school year with confidence and without the typically "brain-drain" that occurs over the summer, thanks to Gillian.

I was seriously considering dropping out when I was referred to Themba Tutors. … More I was paired up with a wonderful tutor, Julie, who was a total lifesaver. We were introduced to a wonderful tutor: Mcedwyn. He and our son, a freshman in college, worked well together. As a result, our son’s grades significantly improved. The tutor taught our son subject content and various methods to effectively … More study for quizzes and exams. Our son was also taught time management and organization. My son’s experience with the tutor made the first year of college a less intimidating experience.

We have been with our tutor, Cailin Schiller, for two years, from 5th - 7th grade. She started as an executive functioning tutor with my daughter. From the start, she demonstrated a depth of expertise and a selective use of techniques skillfully … More adapted to my daughter’s ADHD and Math disability. Cailin made Math accessible and understandable to her in a way that even her teachers had not been able to do. She differentiated reading, writing and math tasks and assignments to tailor them to my daughter’s unique learning differences. Not only did it have an effect on her grades and her work efficiency, but she finally could do her work with less anxiety. Even my daughter’s teachers used Cailin’s guidance to modify their work with her. But most importantly, she became my daughter’s favorite resource. I can’t say how invaluable Cailin has been to my daughter’s progress and well-being. I’d recommend her a million times over. She is a gem.

EXPERT 1:1 EXECUTIVE FUNCTION COACHING FOR GRADES 1–5 NYC

New York City (NYC), Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Boston, Long Island, Westchester, Connecticut (CT), New Jersey (NJ)

Is Your Elementary Schooler Struggling with Focus, Organization, or Planning?

Watching a capable elementary schooler struggle with focus, organization, or task completion can be frustrating and emotionally draining. Many parents find themselves searching for answers like “help my child with organization skills in elementary school” or wondering why their child struggles with planning and follow-through. Questions about how to improve working memory in children or how to teach time management to early elementary students are extremely common. At Themba Tutors, we understand the developmental challenges students in grades 1–5 face as they learn to manage schoolwork, routines, and expectations independently.

Our 1:1 executive function coaching in NYC provides individualized instruction that helps young learners build the foundational skills they need to succeed academically and personally. We specialize in executive function coaching for elementary students, supporting skills such as organization, planning, emotional regulation, and sustained attention. For students who need additional academic reinforcement, we also offer Executive Function Coaching with Academic Support to strengthen performance in subjects like math and science while reinforcing core executive skills.

For families in New York City and beyond, we offer specialized executive function programs and services for grades 1–5 designed to improve focus, organization, and self-management. Our approach helps students build planning skills, independence, and confidence while addressing learning challenges early. We offer free consultations and meet-and-greets with our expert staff. Our executive function coaches can work with students in-home throughout NYC, including Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. We also support families on Long Island, in Westchester, Boston, Connecticut (CT), and New Jersey (NJ). Whether you are seeking in-home executive function support for elementary students in NYC or a virtual executive function coach for young learners, Themba Tutors helps children build lasting skills for academic success.

Understanding the Everyday Struggles of Elementary Students

Parents of students in grades 1–5 often notice patterns that signal executive function challenges. These may include frequently lost homework, difficulty starting assignments even when instructions are clear, or emotional outbursts when routines change unexpectedly. Many children struggle to follow multi-step directions from teachers or caregivers, which can lead to frustration, incomplete work, and declining confidence. These challenges are not a reflection of intelligence or effort but are often signs that a child needs targeted executive function support.

If your child is struggling in school or you are concerned about learning differences, executive function coaching can provide meaningful support. Our services offer structured strategies for children with complex learning needs and neurodivergent learners, helping them develop systems for organization, planning, and emotional regulation while strengthening their ability to manage daily academic demands.

For students with learning differences or ADHD, we also offer NYC Special Needs Tutoring .

The Link Between Executive Function, ADHD, and Early Academic Success

The Link Between Executive Function, ADHD, and Early Academic Success

Research consistently shows that executive function (EF) challenges significantly impact children’s academic performance, particularly for students with ADHD. Difficulties with working memory, impulse control, and sustained attention often contribute to classroom behavior concerns and inconsistent academic progress. Studies indicate that these executive function deficits are closely linked to learning challenges commonly seen in children with ADHD.

When ADHD is paired with executive function difficulties, students may struggle more with organization, attention regulation, and emotional control, all of which affect early academic success. Our ADHD-focused executive function coaching for young children addresses these challenges directly by teaching impulse control strategies, strengthening cognitive flexibility, and building systems for organization and follow-through. We also provide kindergarten executive function support, recognizing that early intervention can create a strong foundation for long-term learning.

Our program includes specialized support for ADHD, autism spectrum learning needs, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, nonverbal learning differences, and twice-exceptional (2e) learners. Our tutors provide structured, evidence-informed guidance that helps students overcome obstacles and build confidence in the classroom.

We support families in strengthening essential executive functioning skills for elementary students, including time management, organization, impulse control, and emotional regulation. Our coaching framework incorporates the 13 executive functioning skills for academic success, offering practical, age-appropriate strategies that promote academic growth and independence for students in grades 1–5.

Our Personalized Executive Function Coaching for Young Learners

Our executive function coaching for elementary students is designed to support real-life challenges at both home and school. We use structured, practical strategies that help young learners build independence, confidence, and consistency across daily routines.

Building Essential Executive Functioning Skills

  • Planning: For elementary students, planning includes breaking down simple projects, gathering materials, and sequencing steps for daily routines. Our coaches teach children how to think ahead, anticipate needs, and create manageable action plans, addressing common concerns such as “my child struggles with planning schoolwork.” These skills also support comprehension and follow-through.
  • Organization: Organization involves keeping track of supplies, managing binders, and knowing where completed work belongs. We help students develop systems such as color-coding, labeling, and checklists to reduce lost homework and build reliable homework organization habits for elementary students.
  • Time Management: Students in grades 1–5 are still developing an understanding of time. Our coaching introduces visual schedules, timers, and structured routines to support smoother transitions and task completion. These strategies are effective for time management for 1st graders through upper elementary students and directly address difficulty starting tasks and procrastination.
  • Focus and Attention: Many young learners struggle to maintain focus in busy classrooms or during independent work. We provide targeted strategies for focus and attention coaching for kids, helping them manage distractions effectively . We explore the four types of attentional focus—divided, alternating, sustained, and selective—to help students improve concentration and organization across settings.
  • Impulse Control: Impulse control may include waiting a turn, raising a hand, or pausing before reacting. Our coaches teach age-appropriate impulse control strategies through techniques such as mindfulness and breathing exercises, helping students regulate behavior and responses.
  • Working Memory: Working memory supports a child’s ability to follow multi-step directions and retain instructions. We use visual supports, repetition, retrieval practice, and task chunking to improve working memory in children and reduce frustration with multi-step tasks.
  • Emotional Regulation: Elementary students are learning how to manage strong emotions. Our coaching helps children recognize feelings, develop coping strategies, and reduce emotional overwhelm, supporting confidence and resilience in academic settings.
  • Task Initiation: Getting started can be one of the biggest hurdles for young learners. We teach strategies such as breaking tasks into smaller steps, using visual cues, and setting short-term goals to reduce avoidance and build momentum.
  • Cognitive Flexibility: Cognitive flexibility allows students to adapt to changes and approach problems from different perspectives. We support children in navigating unexpected challenges while encouraging patience and flexibility, recognizing that progress develops steadily over time.

Empowering Parents: Strategies for Home and School

We believe meaningful progress happens when families and coaches work together. Our executive function coaching model equips parents with practical tools and evidence-based strategies to support their child’s executive function development across home and school environments.

  • Understand ADHD: We help parents understand ADHD’s characteristics, including attention challenges, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. We also explain the four types of attentional focus—divided, alternating, sustained, and selective—each critical for academic productivity.
  • Build Empathy: Parents learn to understand their child’s perspective and recognize ADHD as a neurodevelopmental difference, not a lack of effort.
  • Set Realistic Expectations: We guide families in setting achievable academic and behavioral goals aligned with their child’s developmental stage.
  • Structured Environment: We emphasize consistent routines, visual schedules, and timers to strengthen organization skills in elementary school.
  • Task Breakdown: Parents learn how to break tasks into smaller, manageable steps to reduce overwhelm.
  • Time Management: We teach time management strategies using timers and apps to support transitions and follow-through.
  • Organizational Skills: We implement organizational systems such as labeling, color-coding, and checklists to support homework organization for elementary students.
  • Positive Reinforcement: We encourage praise and rewards to build motivation and confidence.
  • Self-Regulation: We teach self-regulation strategies including mindfulness and breathing exercises, reinforcing impulse control strategies for young students.
  • Goal Setting: Families learn to set short- and long-term goals while celebrating milestones.
  • Communication Skills: We promote open communication, active listening, and a supportive family environment.
  • Collaboration with Professionals: We encourage coordination with pediatricians, therapists, and school counselors to support complex learning needs and neurodivergent learners.
  • Modeling: Parents practice strategies through modeling and role-play.
  • Patience and Flexibility: We emphasize cognitive flexibility and realistic timelines for progress.
  • Self-Care for Parents: Supporting parents’ well-being helps them better support their child.
  • Working Memory Strategies: We share working memory strategies such as visual supports, retrieval practice, and multi-sensory instruction.

Ongoing communication between parents, students, and professionals is essential. Every child’s learning profile is unique, and strategies are thoughtfully adapted to match individual strengths and needs.

Hear From NYC Parents: Success Stories & Testimonials

My son got to a point in his writing where he just hit a wall with brainstorming. He needed some extra 1:1 time outside of school with someone who could handle the executive functions aspect, the anxiety piece, the extra time/silence my son sometimes needed, and the warmth and creativity that is his native space. Jake was beyond perfect. I just couldn’t have dreamt up a better fit. In addition, he documented his process and what was working with my son so that I have a collection of emails to look back on when I need reminders about how to help my son when he’s feeling stuck – which is now very seldom. If I had five thumbs, they’d all be up. So I’ll just say 5 stars! Thank you, Jakek, and thank you, Themba Tutors. (By the way, this was affordable, to boot.)

I was referred to Themba Tutors to help my daughter strengthen her executive functioning skills. Craig was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. He provided us with a few different tutors to meet to find the right fit. We’ve been working with McEdwin “Mackie,” and he’s been wonderful. My daughter has worked with several tutors over the past five years, and Mackie is the first tutor she happily meets with. This is a huge win!

FAQs for Parents of Elementary Students

FAQs for Parents of Elementary Students NYC

What is executive function coaching for elementary school students?

Executive function coaching for elementary school students helps children develop the thinking and self-management skills required for academic success and daily routines. These skills include planning, organization, time management, impulse control, working memory, and emotional regulation. Our coaches work one-on-one with students to strengthen these executive functioning skills for kids, providing targeted support for learning difficulties and helping children overcome learning obstacles.

How does executive function coaching differ from traditional tutoring for young children?

Traditional tutoring focuses on academic subjects such as math or reading. Executive function coaching targets the underlying skills that allow students to learn effectively across all subjects. For example, while a math tutor may teach fractions, an executive function coach helps a child organize assignments, manage time, and stay focused during work. Themba Tutors uniquely combines Executive Function Coaching with Academic Support for comprehensive, personalized learning strategies.

At what age should my child start executive function coaching?

There is no single “right” age to begin executive function coaching, but early support is often beneficial. We offer kindergarten executive function support and specialize in working with students in grades 1–5. If you notice challenges with focus, organization, or planning—even in kindergarten or first grade—early intervention can help your child build strong foundations and reach their academic potential.

What are the signs my 1st–5th grader may need executive function support?

Common signs include:

  • Trouble with time management for 1st graders or older students
  • Ongoing difficulty with homework organization
  • Struggles with planning schoolwork
  • Difficulty sustaining focus or frequent distraction
  • Impulsive behaviors or difficulty with self-control
  • Forgetting instructions or struggling with working memory
  • Losing school supplies or personal belongings
  • Difficulty starting tasks independently
  • Emotional meltdowns over small changes
  • Challenges following multi-step directions

Do you offer executive function coaching for children with ADHD?

Yes. ADHD executive function coaching for young children is a core area of expertise at Themba Tutors. Children with ADHD often experience challenges related to attention, organization, and impulse control. Our coaches use targeted, evidence-based strategies to support these needs, helping children succeed both academically and socially through specialized ADHD tutoring.

Can executive function coaching help with homework completion and organization?

Absolutely. Improving focus and organization around homework is a central goal of our elementary executive function coaching. We teach strategies such as breaking tasks into manageable steps, using planners, creating effective workspaces, and managing distractions. These tools help make homework time more productive and less stressful.

How are your executive function coaches for grades 1–5 selected?

Our executive function coaches are carefully selected from backgrounds in education, psychology, and special education. Each coach receives extensive training in evidence-based strategies and works to create a supportive, encouraging environment for every student, whether providing in-home executive function support in NYC or virtual coaching. Our team has experience supporting neurodivergent learners and students with complex learning needs.

Do you provide in-home executive function coaching across NYC?

Yes. We offer in-home executive function coaching throughout New York City, including:

  • Executive function coaching Upper West Side
  • Elementary executive function coach Brooklyn Heights
  • ADHD support for kids Park Slope
  • Children’s executive function specialist Manhattan
  • Private tutor for ADHD grades 1–5 Queens

Please contact us to confirm availability in your specific neighborhood.

What is the typical duration of executive function coaching?

The length of coaching varies based on a child’s goals, needs, and consistency of participation. Some students make meaningful progress within a few months, while others benefit from ongoing support throughout the school year. We continuously adjust learning plans as skills develop to promote long-term independence.

How do parents collaborate with the executive function coach?

Parent collaboration is essential. Our coaches maintain regular communication with families, sharing strategies and progress updates. Parents are guided on how to reinforce executive functioning skills at home, creating consistency across environments and supporting students with learning differences or complex learning needs.

Every coach offers a free 15-minute remote meet-and-greet, so you can get to know them and see if it feels like the right fit. We’re very responsive and easy to communicate with throughout the process. From there, we’ll thoughtfully match you with one or more of our coaches.
