We could not be happier with the services Valerie provided! She is very thoughtful and knowledgeable and provided significant guidance to support our daughter's speech development outside of our scheduled sessions. She established … More a great working relationship with her, and she will definitely be missed! Your business model is amazing and it was an absolute pleasure working with Valerie. I've referred your organization and Valerie to the Executive Director of our daughter's school and friends/colleagues who are in need of speech therapy services.

We had a very positive experience with Alissa as a tutor for our pod of 5th grade boys from January - June 2020. She cared a lot about the boys and worked hard to create meaningful activities for them. The pod experience was invaluable … More for all of our families during a difficult year and we were so grateful to have found this partnership! We also want to appreciate Craig for helping to match us with a tutor on very short notice after we had cycled through a few folks who were not able to see the commitment through. Thanks for sticking with us!
  • Avatar S CL ★★★★★ 3 years ago
Dusty was the exact person we needed to help our child finish out the school year. So grateful to him for the way he steadily encouraged her and helped her stay on track and organized. He is flexible, responsive to our needs/schedule as … More a family, and a delight to be with. We are also thankful that Craig at Themba Tutors really "gets it" and partnered us with such a wonderful tutor who was a great fit for our girl.
  • Avatar Nicole May ★★★★★ 3 years ago
My child worked with Gillian D virtually for math enrichment. She is an excellent teacher. She took time to understand my child's specific learning style and provided tools that would be engaging. She was kind and empathetic- really … More made it her goal to connect with my child and build trust and rapport. My child started the school year with confidence and without the typically "brain-drain" that occurs over the summer, thanks to Gillian.

Our son started in a new high school, 100% remote, and was really struggling with Latin and Physics. I found Themba Tudors online and had an initial call with Craig, who was very knowledgeable, responsive, and found 2 amazing tutors for … More us. Both the Latin and the physics tutors were fantastic, connected with my son really well and helped him go from 'failing' grade to 'honors'! I will for sure continue using (and recommending!) As an adult student diagnosed with a learning disability during grad school, I knew I needed help dealing with my Master's program's demanding workload. I was seriously considering dropping out when I was referred to Themba Tutors. … More I was paired up with a wonderful tutor, Julie, who was a total lifesaver. We were introduced to a wonderful tutor: Mcedwyn. He and our son, a freshman in college, worked well together. As a result, our son’s grades significantly improved. The tutor taught our son subject content and various methods to effectively … More study for quizzes and exams. Our son was also taught time management and organization. My son’s experience with the tutor made the first year of college a less intimidating experience.

We have been with our tutor, Cailin Schiller, for two years, from 5th - 7th grade. She started as an executive functioning tutor with my daughter. From the start, she demonstrated a depth of expertise and a selective use of techniques skillfully … More adapted to my daughter’s ADHD and Math disability. Cailin made Math accessible and understandable to her in a way that even her teachers had not been able to do. She differentiated reading, writing and math tasks and assignments to tailor them to my daughter’s unique learning differences. Not only did it have an effect on her grades and her work efficiency, but she finally could do her work with less anxiety. Even my daughter’s teachers used Cailin’s guidance to modify their work with her. But most importantly, she became my daughter’s favorite resource. I can’t say how invaluable Cailin has been to my daughter’s progress and well-being. I’d recommend her a million times over. She is a gem.

EXECUTIVE FUNCTION COACHING FOR MIDDLE SCHOOLERS IN NYC

In-Home & Virtual 1:1 Support for Stronger Skills, Better Grades, and Greater Independence

Best 1:1 Middle School Executive Function Coaching in NYC | Free Consultations & Meet-and-Greets With Our Staff | We Travel to You!

executive function coaching middle school students

Middle school brings a sharp jump in academic expectations. Even bright students can feel overwhelmed by the faster pace, heavier workload, and growing demand for independence. If homework battles are draining your evenings or your child is struggling with organization, planning, or follow-through, we can help.

At Themba Tutors, we provide expert 1:1 Executive Function (EF) Coaching and Executive Function Coaching with Academic Support for middle school students across New York City—including Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Staten Island. Our goal is simple: help students build the self-management, academic skills, and confidence they need to succeed now and in high school.

Our coaching integrates academic support with EF skill-building—giving middle schoolers the tools they need to stay organized, manage time, study effectively, and thrive in NYC’s demanding school system.

Why Executive Function Skills Matter in Middle School

The Jump From Elementary to Middle School Is Bigger Than Most Parents Think

Middle school is the first major test of a student’s executive function system. Students must now:

  • Track assignments from several teachers
  • Manage long-term projects
  • Use planners or digital tools
  • Prepare for exams with little teacher guidance
  • Manage increasing social and emotional demands
  • Navigate a busier school environment

When EF skills haven’t developed at the same pace as academic expectations, students experience real barriers to success. The result is frustration, avoidable conflict, and slipping confidence.

With the right coaching, these patterns can change quickly.

Signs Your Middle Schooler Needs Executive Function Coaching

Academic & Schoolwork Struggles

  • Homework takes far longer than it should
  • Work is always rushed, missing, or incomplete
  • The student claims “I have no homework” when assignments exist
  • Materials are lost or misplaced
  • Projects are started the night before

Organization Problems

  • Backpack and binder look like a “paper explosion”
  • Locker is chaotic
  • Digital files and Google Classroom are disorganized
  • Student often forgets what they need for class

Time Management Difficulties

  • Constant procrastination
  • Poor estimates of how long work will take
  • Struggling to balance assignments, activities, and free time
  • Forgetting deadlines or upcoming tests

Attention & Self-Regulation Challenges

  • Easily overwhelmed by multitasking
  • Difficulty focusing without reminders
  • Emotional outbursts related to school stress
  • Avoidance of challenging tasks

If your child fits several of these patterns, targeted executive function coaching is one of the most effective interventions available.

Where We Provide In-Home and Virtual Coaching

Our services are available throughout New York City, including Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx. Many families prefer the convenience and familiarity of in-home sessions, while others choose virtual coaching for its flexibility. Both options deliver the same level of personalized support, and many families combine the two when schedules vary.

Our Executive Function Coaching Approach

Each student begins with a personalized assessment so we can understand their routines, strengths, academic demands, and emotional needs. This initial step helps us develop a customized plan that reflects both the challenges the student is facing and their unique learning style.

Building Effective Time Management

Time management is one of the most important skills for middle school students in NYC. Our coaches teach students how to use planners, digital calendars, and scheduling apps to map out their week and prepare for tests or long-term assignments. Students learn to break down large tasks, estimate how long work will take, and build the steady routines that prevent late-night cramming and academic burnout.

Strengthening Organization and Materials Management

A chaotic backpack or disorganized binder can sabotage even the brightest student. We teach students how to maintain simple, sustainable systems at home and school. This includes establishing predictable places for school materials, organizing digital files, maintaining clean workspaces, and developing routines that help students leave home each morning fully prepared.

Improving Planning and Task Initiation

For many middle schoolers, getting started is the hardest part. Our coaches help students create a plan of action for each assignment, break work into smaller pieces, and adopt simple cue-based strategies to get started quickly. These routines help students overcome avoidance and reduce the stress that comes from feeling overwhelmed.

Enhancing Focus and Reducing Distractions

NYC students face constant distractions—academic, social, and digital. Our work helps students recognize their attention patterns and use tools that support sustained focus. We teach students how to minimize digital interruptions, build short and effective “focus sprints,” and set up an environment that helps them remain productive without constant reminders.

Supporting Emotional Control and Stress Management

Middle school brings more complex schoolwork and more complex emotions. Stress, anxiety, and frustration can easily disrupt learning. Our coaches help students build emotional awareness, develop productive coping strategies, and navigate school-related challenges with greater calm and confidence.

Real Results: Testimonials from NYC Parents & Students

My 13 year old son worked with Aaron on Math throughout 8th grade and we are so pleased with what they were able to accomplish together. B had always seen himself as good at math and was placed in honors math for 7th grade but had a hard time keeping up, was diagnosed with ADHD (turns out he hadn’t been retaining or absorbing much that year) and put back in “regular “ math for 8th grade. We knew he needed to shore up fundamentals and restore confidence/mojo as a math student. Aaron helped Billy get caught up on the fundamentals he’d been fuzzy on and get a solid handle on each building block as the Algebra got more complex. He read through Billy’s diagnosis report to better understand the learning differences and executive functioning challenges he was working with and tailored his teaching style to include coping strategies to encourage less impulsivity, more attention to detail/review, etc.

Aaron was also very easy to work with – always flexible and following up sessions with helpful summaries and reminders and encouragements for Billy. Highly recommend!

My son got to a point in his writing where he just hit a wall with brainstorming. He needed some extra 1:1 time outside of school with someone who could handle the executive functions aspect, the anxiety piece, the extra time/silence my son sometimes needed, and the warmth and creativity that is his native space. Jake was beyond perfect. I just couldn’t have dreamt up a better fit. In addition, he documented his process, what was working with my son, so that I have a collection of emails to look back on when I need reminding about how to help my son when he’s feeling stuck – which is now very seldom. If I had five thumbs, they’d all be up. So I’ll just say, 5 stars! Thank you, Jakek and thank you, Themba Tutors. (By the way, this was affordable, to boot.)

-Micaela B.

Working with Jordan was an extremely positive experience for our family. I contacted Themba Tutors with deep concerns about my son. This incredibly book-smart teen is an extremely disorganized person whose grades suffered due to a lack of organizational skills. My son was responsive to Jordan’s suggestions and methods of organization. They worked through using a planner, calendar, alarm clock, and other methods and systems to help plan for each week. Most importantly, Jordan was a voice of reason (someone other than the nagging mother) to instill the importance of organization and task initiation. Understanding why this was so important was a huge step in moving forward and seeing progress. After a few months of working together, Jordan and I agreed that my son was ready to work independently on his executive function skills. I also learned some helpful tools and tips, and we will continue monitoring the situation to see if we need Jordan’s assistance in the near future. We are grateful for the organizational support he provided us. Grades are now all up. I am grateful that my son has learned lifelong skills to set him up for lifelong success.

Khalilah has been a fantastic science and executive functioning tutor for my daughter. She was quickly able to assess the best and most effective methods for teaching. She is also high energy and extremely dedicated to making the most out of her sessions. Highly recommend!
