CHEMISTRY

What Is Chemistry?

Chemistry is the science that involves elements and compounds composed of atoms, molecules, and ions: their composition, structure, properties, behavior, and the changes they undergo during a reaction with other substances.

Chemistry is involved in everything we do.

  • See
  • Hear
  • Smell
  • Taste
  • Touch

THE PERIODIC TABLE: CRASH COURSE CHEMISTRY #4

Chemistry includes seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching. It involves an intricate series of chemical reactions and interactions in your body.

Chemistry is a big part of our everyday life. We can find chemistry in foods, in the air, substances, our emotions, and literally every object we can see or touch.

Chemistry Basics

Chemistry touches everything we do because almost everything in existence can be broken down into chemical building blocks.

The main building blocks in chemistry are chemical elements, which are substances made from one atom. Each chemical is exclusive, composed of a group number of protons, neutrons, and electrons. It is identified by a reputation and a chemical symbol, like “C” for carbon. The elements that scientists have discovered so far are listed in the table of elements. They include both elements found in nature, such as carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, and artificially produced elements like lawrencium.

Chemical elements can bond together to make chemical compounds, which are substances made from multiple elements, like CO2 (which is formed by one atom connected to two oxygen atoms), or atoms of a single element, like oxygen gas (which is made of two oxygen atoms connected). These chemical compounds can then bond with other compounds or elements to make countless other substances and materials.

The Five Main Branches of Chemistry

Analytical Chemistry

This refers to the analysis of chemicals. It includes qualitative methods, like watching color changes, and quantitative methods, like examining the precise wavelength(s) of sunshine that a chemical absorbed to result in that color change.

These methods enable scientists to characterize many various properties of chemicals and benefit society in many important ways. For example, analytical chemistry helps food companies make tastier frozen dinners by detecting how chemicals in food change once they are frozen over time. Analytical chemistry is also wont to monitor the environment’s health by measuring chemicals in water or soil.

Biochemistry

Biochemistry uses chemistry techniques to understand how biological systems work at a chemical level. Thanks to biochemistry, researchers are ready to map the human genome, understand what different proteins neutralize the body, and develop cures for several diseases.

Inorganic Chemistry

Inorganic chemistry studies the chemical compounds in inorganic or non-living things like minerals and metals. Traditionally, inorganic chemistry considers compounds that do not contain carbon (covered by organic chemistry), but this definition is not completely accurate, according to the American Chemical Society (ACS).

Some compounds studied in chemistry, like “organometallic compounds,” contain metals that are attached to carbon — the most studied element in chemistry. As such, compounds like these are considered a part of both fields. Inorganic chemistry is employed to make a variety of everyday products, including paints, fertilizers, and sunscreens.

Organic Chemistry

Organic chemistry deals with chemical compounds that contain carbon, a component considered essential to life. Organic chemists study the composition, structure, properties, and reactions of such compounds, which along with carbon, contain other non-carbon elements such as hydrogen, sulfur, and silicon. Organic chemistry is employed in many applications, as described by the ACS, like biotechnology, the petroleum industry, pharmaceuticals, and plastics.

Physical Chemistry

Physical chemistry uses concepts from physics and apply them in the context of chemistry. For example, deciding how atoms move and interact with one another or why some liquids, including water, become vapor at high temperatures. Physical chemists attempt to understand these phenomena at a really small scale — on the extent of atoms and molecules — to derive conclusions about how chemical reactions work and the things that give specific materials their own unique properties.

What Do Chemists Do?

Chemists typically specialize in biochemistry, neurochemistry, nuclear chemistry, or theoretical chemistry. In the pharmaceutical industry, chemists develop drugs and study their properties to determine the quality and stability of medicines. Some chemists even work in forensic science to establish evidence in criminal investigations. Experienced chemists are also involved in preparing documentation for product licenses.

Why Is Chemistry Important?

Chemistry is vital because everything you are doing is chemistry! Even your body is made of chemicals. Chemical reactions occur once you breathe, eat, or even as you simply sit and read. Everything around us is made by chemicals, compounds, and chemical reactions. Needless to say, chemistry is the study of everything.
