ADHD Executive Functioning Coaching Tutoring

Working with people diagnosed with ADHD and executive function issues is a principle area of Themba’s expertise. These issues cut across curricula and job responsibilities. Many bright students have to work hard just to keep their heads above water.

Executive functioning is a neuropsychological term that refers to a person’s ability to activate or cue a neural system to help him or her perform efficiently across a variety of functions. These include carrying out task initiation and follow-through, sustained attention, performance monitoring, inhibition of impulses, and goal-directed persistence.

Students and adults can benefit from improved executive functioning. When students’ grades suffer because of significant functional weaknesses, explicit instruction and professional support can help them learn active strategies to become more efficient learners. These strategies will be useful throughout their lifetimes.

Executive functioning skills are crucial for reading comprehension, structuring essays, math problem solving, project planning, completing homework assignments, performing well on tests, and becoming an active learner in the classroom.

Themba Tutors provide executive functioning tutoring and coaching. First, based on your child’s needs and availability, we’ll match him or her with a learning specialist who has professional expertise in helping students improve these skills. You’ll speak with the Tutor by phone, after which we’ll schedule the first session. With your consent, the Tutor will review all evaluations and related paperwork before meeting with you and your family. The Tutor will next establish a relationship with you and your child, and begin to gain insight into your child’s personality, strengths, and weaknesses. Any or all of the following skills may then be addressed:  Improving memory and information retention, spending more focused time on tasks (and completing them), decreasing procrastination, organizing schoolwork, managing time more effectively, and learning to think carefully before acting. The Tutor will model, and support, your child’s application of these skills.  Our ultimate goals are helping increase your child’s awareness of the nature of these skills, and helping them execute and monitor their use in an efficient and timely manner.
