We could not be happier with the services Valerie provided! She is very thoughtful and knowledgeable and provided significant guidance to support our daughter's speech development outside of our scheduled sessions. She established … More a great working relationship with her, and she will definitely be missed! Your business model is amazing and it was an absolute pleasure working with Valerie. I've referred your organization and Valerie to the Executive Director of our daughter's school and friends/colleagues who are in need of speech therapy services.

We saw her for a feeding therapy evaluation and while she doesn’t think my daughter needs more feeding therapy sessions at this time, but she gave me lots of tips to try. We had a very positive experience with Alissa as a tutor for our pod of 5th grade boys from January - June 2020. She cared a lot about the boys and worked hard to create meaningful activities for them. The pod experience was invaluable … More for all of our families during a difficult year and we were so grateful to have found this partnership! We also want to appreciate Craig for helping to match us with a tutor on very short notice after we had cycled through a few folks who were not able to see the commitment through. Thanks for sticking with us!

Dusty was the exact person we needed to help our child finish out the school year. So grateful to him for the way he steadily encouraged her and helped her stay on track and organized. He is flexible, responsive to our needs/schedule as … More a family, and a delight to be with. We are also thankful that Craig at Themba Tutors really "gets it" and partnered us with such a wonderful tutor who was a great fit for our girl.
  • Avatar Nicole May ★★★★★ 3 years ago
My child worked with Gillian D virtually for math enrichment. She is an excellent teacher. She took time to understand my child's specific learning style and provided tools that would be engaging. She was kind and empathetic- really … More made it her goal to connect with my child and build trust and rapport. My child started the school year with confidence and without the typically "brain-drain" that occurs over the summer, thanks to Gillian.

Our son started in a new high school, 100% remote, and was really struggling with Latin and Physics. I found Themba Tudors online and had an initial call with Craig, who was very knowledgeable, responsive, and found 2 amazing tutors for … More us. Both the Latin and the physics tutors were fantastic, connected with my son really well and helped him go from 'failing' grade to 'honors'! I will for sure continue using (and recommending!) Themba Tutors. Thank you, C, K, and W!

Giulia Mercuri is a great Italian tutor! She was very responsive and accessible. As an adult student diagnosed with a learning disability during grad school, I knew I needed help dealing with my Master's program's demanding workload. I was seriously considering dropping out when I was referred to Themba Tutors. … More I was paired up with a wonderful tutor, Julie, who was a total lifesaver. I learned many techniques that I can utilize in the future as I embark on the next phase of my career.
I can wholeheartedly say after working with Themba for two years that I would not have finished my program without this organization. And I am so thankful I selected them.

We were introduced to a wonderful tutor: Mcedwyn. He and our son, a freshman in college, worked well together. As a result, our son’s grades significantly improved. The tutor taught our son subject content and various methods to effectively … More study for quizzes and exams. Our son was also taught time management and organization. My son’s experience with the tutor made the first year of college a less intimidating experience.

We have been with our tutor, Cailin Schiller, for two years, from 5th - 7th grade. She started as an executive functioning tutor with my daughter. From the start, she demonstrated a depth of expertise and a selective use of techniques skillfully … More adapted to my daughter’s ADHD and Math disability. Cailin made Math accessible and understandable to her in a way that even her teachers had not been able to do. She differentiated reading, writing and math tasks and assignments to tailor them to my daughter’s unique learning differences. Not only did it have an effect on her grades and her work efficiency, but she finally could do her work with less anxiety. Even my daughter’s teachers used Cailin’s guidance to modify their work with her. But most importantly, she became my daughter’s favorite resource. I can’t say how invaluable Cailin has been to my daughter’s progress and well-being. I’d recommend her a million times over. She is a gem.

We were very lucky to have found Edwouine Swift, my son's therapist through Themba Tutors. Thomas is 12 years old, and it is extremely difficult to get him to write. Academic Tutoring for Students on the Autism Spectrum NYC

ACADEMIC TUTORING FOR SCHOOL-AGE, TEEN, AND COLLEGE STUDENTS ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

ACADEMIC TUTORING FOR SCHOOL-AGE, TEEN, AND COLLEGE STUDENTS ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

Finding the right academic tutoring autism spectrum NYC families can trust is essential for students who process the world differently. At Themba Tutors, we recognize that a child or teenager with autism spectrum disorder often possesses incredible intellectual potential that traditional classrooms might not fully capture. Our mission is to provide the guidance and special education expertise necessary to help these children and young adults thrive.

Students on the autism spectrum often bring strong reasoning skills, deep interests, and original ways of thinking to their academic work. Academic tutoring for NYC students on the autism spectrum focuses on helping these learners access curriculum, demonstrate understanding, and build confidence—without forcing them into learning systems that don’t align with how they process information. We also support students with overlapping autism and ADHD profiles (AuDHD) through integrated tutoring and coaching that addresses attention regulation, flexibility, planning, and follow-through alongside academic instruction. Whether a student is navigating dyslexia, processing delays, or other learning differences, our approach meets them exactly where they are.

Themba Tutors provides individualized academic tutoring for school-age, teen, and college students. We offer in-person support across New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Staten Island), Long Island, and Westchester, with nearby areas of Connecticut and New Jersey. Remote tutoring is also available for students beyond the NYC metro area. Our special education teacher team understands that academic success is about more than just grades; it’s about feeling empowered in the school system.

The Importance of a Specialized Teacher and Personalized Services

Navigating the Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Classroom

Many autistic students understand academic material but struggle to show what they know within traditional school and college structures. These challenges often increase as academic demands become more complex and less supported. A classroom teacher in a large school system may not always have the time to provide the granular, one-on-one lessons required for a student with high sensory or executive function needs.

Common areas of difficulty include:

  • Starting assignments independently
  • Organizing written work or multi-step responses
  • Managing long-term projects and deadlines
  • Navigating reading-heavy or writing-intensive coursework
  • Performing under timed or high-pressure testing conditions

These patterns are typically connected to differences in processing speed, executive function, sensory load, or communication style—not intelligence or effort. When access barriers are reduced through professional tutoring services, students often demonstrate significantly stronger academic performance and independence. Our professionals and parents work together to ensure that the student’s progress is consistent and measurable.

Specialized Skills for Literacy and Math

When it comes to literacy and math, neurodivergent learners often require a different entry point. For example, a student might have a profound understanding of complex math logic but struggle with the multi-step organization required to solve a long-division problem or a calculus derivative. Similarly, in literacy, a student might have a brilliant analytical mind but struggle with the “blank page” syndrome when starting an essay.

Our expertise lies in breaking down these walls. We provide training and specific strategies that help students translate their thoughts into written or numerical form. We offer our services to anyone in the NYC area seeking a deeper, more empathetic approach to learning.

Math Support and Specialized Tutoring Services in Brooklyn

Math Support and Specialized Tutoring Services in Brooklyn

Building Quantitative Confidence in NYC, and Beyond

For many students, the fast-paced nature of the local school system can be overwhelming. Our math specialists focus on conceptual clarity. We don’t just teach formulas; we teach the “why” behind the numbers. This is particularly helpful for students on the autism spectrum who may reject rote memorization in favor of logical systems.

Our tutors often work with students near prospect avenue and surrounding neighborhoods, providing a familiar environment for learning. By meeting students in their own communities, we reduce the sensory travel load, allowing them to focus entirely on their math or science lessons.

Comprehensive Special Education Services

Our special education approach is holistic. We look at the student’s entire profile, including any speech progress they are making with a speech therapist. We know that communication and academic output are deeply linked. If a student is currently undergoing speech therapy, our tutors can collaborate with their speech therapist to ensure that the language used in tutoring sessions reinforces the goals set in therapy.

By coordinating with coordinators and other professionals and parents, we create a unified front that supports the student’s academic success. Whether the student is visiting us at a local center or we are conducting home visits, the level of professionalism remains unmatched.

Developing Executive Function Skills through Tutoring Services

Tutoring Services for Long-Term Growth

A special education teacher does more than just help with homework; they build the skills necessary for life. This includes managing hours of study time, organizing a backpack, and learning how to interact with school and friends.

Tutoring support may include:

  • Reading comprehension: Strategies for identifying main ideas and making inferences.
  • Structured writing: Using graphic organizers to map out essays and research papers.
  • Math problem-solving: Breaking down word problems into logical steps.
  • Study skills: Creating realistic schedules and using digital tools for organization.

When helpful, tutors integrate executive function strategies—such as planning tools, task breakdowns, pacing supports, and external organization systems—directly into academic work. This allows students to build skills in context, rather than through abstract drills. We provide lots of tips on how to manage anxiety during exams and how to break down a 10-page research paper into manageable daily tasks.

Professionalism and Certifications

Every teacher at Themba Tutors holds the necessary certifications to work with students with disabilities. We pride ourselves on our professionalism and our ability to build rapport with students who may have had negative experiences with education in the past. We understand that for a student on the autism spectrum, trust is the foundation of all learning.

Why Choose Themba Tutors for Your Child?

Expertise in Neurodiversity

A standard tutor might know the subject matter, but a special education teacher knows the learner. This expertise is what sets our tutoring services apart. We understand the nuances of autism spectrum disorder, from sensory sensitivities to the “spiky” profile of abilities where a student may be a genius in math but struggle with basic literacy.

Our staff goes through rigorous training to stay updated on the latest pedagogical techniques for neurodivergent learners. This ensures that every appointment is productive and that the strategies used are backed by educational research.

Support for NYC Students and Families

We understand the unique pressures faced by NYC students. From the competitive high school admissions process to the rigors of specialized programs, we are here to provide the guidance needed. We even offer support for families living near prospect avenue and other specific neighborhoods, ensuring that high-quality help is never too far away.

When you book an appointment with us, you aren’t just getting a tutor; you are getting an advocate. We help parents navigate the complexities of the school system, offering lots of tips on how to communicate with school coordinators to ensure that IEP goals are being met.

Success Stories and Progress in New York City

Ethan is having a fantastic junior year, thanks to Alissa’s support and all the habits she has helped him build over the past 4 years. He had his highest GPA this past quarter.

I recently had another reason to be grateful for Alissa and Themba Tutors as I met with Ethan’s guidance counselor for a college application meeting. She was so complimentary of Ethan, his academic achievements, AP course load and his portfolio of extracurricular activities. In the context of college preparation, she praised his readiness and his diligent work over the past 2 years.

I know for a fact we wouldn’t be looking at the colleges he is considering if Alissa hadn’t been by our side throughout this entire journey. I am forever grateful to Alissa and Themba for making such a difference in our lives

I can’t recommend Felicity enough. We’ve worked with a lot of coaches and care providers, and she is aces. She relates well with our daughter — which doesn’t happen all the time. She’s caring and empathetic, and when she spoke with my wife and me, she was full of sage and sound suggestions. Her vast experience, high intelligence, and evidence-based approach are great.

– David

I can’t say enough good things about Alissa. Alissa is absolutely wonderful. She brings such kind, warm, caring energy, is fun and engaging, and is also so organized and helpful to our daughter in tutoring both executive functioning and academics. She is able to see her issues so well and I can tell that our daughter really trusts and likes Alissa– they have formed a very nice bond. Alissa is also highly communicative with me and keeps in excellent touch with our daughter. Thank you for introducing us to her… we are very grateful.

– Joshua

Lexie, or Dr. Wille now, is awesome and amazing. I’m getting so much from my sessions with her and am feeling more equipped to tackle the day-to-day problems that brought me to seek coaching in the first place. She’s really compassionate and empathetic in her approach and is quick to acknowledge unproductive negative self-talk that needs reframing. She’s very knowledgeable about a variety of struggles and has an entire arsenal of interventions that she teaches me to see if they work for me. In that vein, she’s super patient, always seems to understand me, and never makes assumptions that are wild or unrepeatable. In fact, most of the time, she is spot on. I have enjoyed working with her and hope to continue for as long as she is available and for as long as I can learn from her.

Measuring Speech Progress and Academic Gains

We track progress meticulously. Whether it is seeing an improvement in speech progress through better classroom participation or seeing a grade rise from a C to an A in math, we celebrate every victory. Our tutoring services are designed to be flexible, adjusting the hours and intensity of support as the student grows more independent.

For many children, the goal is to bridge the gap between their high internal intelligence and their external academic output. By focusing on literacy and math through a neuro-affirming lens, we see students who previously avoided work begin to take initiative.

Bridging the Gap Between School and Friends

Social and academic lives are intertwined. A student who feels confident in their skills is more likely to engage with school and friends. By reducing the stress of academics, we open up mental space for social growth. Our special education experts often see that as academic frustration decreases, a student’s willingness to engage in the social fabric of their school increases.

Subjects and Specialized Support Across the Boroughs

  • Science: Biology, chemistry, and physics with a focus on lab reports and data organization.
