What Is a Test Prep?

We offer  SAT, GRE, SHSAT, ISEE/SSAT, ELA, Regents, TASC, MAP Growth, ACT, LOTE, , MCAT, and GED test preparation tutoring services. Scroll down below for more info about these exams.

In test preparation, a one-size-fits-all approach tends to be ineffective. Tutoring is most powerful when customized to your child’s unique learning profile. Themba Tutors teach test content but, more importantly, help build underlying skills. Most of our students have formally recognized learning issues for which special accommodations are granted, such as extended time or multiple-day testing. The test-taking strategies we teach incorporate such accommodations to the benefit of the student.

What to do before exams? Good Study Habits

Keep Up with Your Work

If you attend class regularly, continue with readings, and take notes conscientiously, studying is often a comparatively pain-free process. Make sure to expand and review class notes regularly throughout the semester. It would be best if you considered making a glossary or collection of note cards for vocabulary review in each class. Many students find that preparing for a private class for 60-90 minutes per day, five or six days per week, will leave them well-prepared at exam time. To assist students with the organization at finals time, we have compiled a couple of time management tools included with this page.

Don’t Cram at the Last Second

Building off our previous entry, try studying for 60-90 minutes per day for every week leading up to an exam. All-nighters don’t work for most people, and students experience declining returns on their efforts when they attempt to study for four and five hours straight.

What Are the Things to Do Before an Exam?

Complete a Mock Test

Many social science, natural science, and foreign language textbooks contain hundreds of questions at the end of chapters that are never answered. You should set aside an hour and try to answer these questions on a paper without using your notes? If you can complete a mock test 3-5 days before an exam, you’ll then know where to focus your studying. You may also combat pre-test jitters by demonstrating to yourself what you recognize. Try answering a few potential essay questions on a timed, mystery basis, and see how you are doing. Other simple tips in conducting a mock test are to ask a friend or classmate or your parents to offer you an oral quiz supported concepts within the textbook or in either of your notes.

Do Not Multitask While Studying

Set aside time to review beforehand then follow through. For most people, meaning leaving your dormitory and turning off visual/auditory distractions, including iPods, Facebook, and music with lyrics. If you’ve got outstanding questions, see your professor or tutor a minimum of three days before the exam. If you’ve given yourself a mock test beforehand, you’ll be ready to attend office hours with an agenda.

Think about what written questions could be on the exam; Outline each potential essay as a pretesting and practice.

Find a Group of Dedicated Students with Whom to Review

A group study session is a perfect time to review and compare notes, ask one another questions, explain ideas to at least one another, discuss the upcoming exam and difficult concepts, and, when appropriate, delegate study tasks. Do set an agenda and a selected time-frame for your group study session so that your work together doesn’t veer off-topic.

Listen for Clues From Your Teachers

Your teacher or your professor will sometimes come right out and tell you about the exam or help you plan your studying strategies. You need to be in school a day to receive such help. Use review sheets thoroughly.

Review your class notes every day. You can add hints, keywords, summaries, idea maps, graphs, charts, discussion points, and questions where applicable. Take the time to arrange lecture notes after class, adding key examples from labs and course readings.

TYPES OF EXAMS

SAT

The SAT is an entrance exam used by most colleges and universities to make admissions decisions. The SAT is a multiple-choice, pencil-and-paper test created and administered by the College Board.

The SAT’s purpose is to measure a high school student’s readiness for college and provide colleges with one common data point that can be used to compare all applicants. Here are some essential college readiness guidelines and skills to follow.

GRE

The Graduate Record Examination, or GRE, is an important step in the graduate school or business school application process. The GRE is a multiple-choice, computer-based, standardized exam often required for admission to graduate programs and graduate business programs (MBA) globally.

The GRE measures your command of basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis, as well as college-level vocabulary. More importantly, it measures your ability to analyze and evaluate written material, think critically, and solve problems.

SHSAT

The Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT) is the only criterion for admissions to 8 of the 9 New York City Specialized High Schools. The only exception is the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, which requires an audition or portfolio for admission.

The SHSAT is administered by the New York City Department of Education and is only available to New York City residents in the 8th grade. 9th-grade students may also choose to take the 9th-grade version of the SHSAT for a very limited number of seats that may become available at the Specialized High Schools.

ISEE/SSAT

The Secondary School Aptitude Test (SSAT) and the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) is the two admissions tests used to determine placement into independent and private junior highs and high schools.

ELA

The ELA test is an untimed test that contains several different kinds of questions. Students answer multiple-choice questions based on short passages they read and write responses to open-ended questions based on stories, articles, or poems they listen to or read.

ACT

The American College Testing Test or ACT is a college admissions test given by high school students to measure their college preparedness. The ACT exam assesses four academic skills: English, arithmetic, reading, and scientific thinking. It also includes a direct writing test, which is optional.

New York State Regents

Regents exams measure student achievement in high school-level courses. To graduate from high school in New York State, students must pass five Regents exams in the following subject areas: English Language Arts, math, science, social studies/history, and any additional Regents exam or another option approved by the State.

TASC

TASC Test Assessing Secondary Completion™ is a state-of-the-art and affordable national high school equivalency assessment. It assesses five subject areas, including Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. The TASC Test measures examinees’ levels of achievement relative to graduating high school seniors, as outlined by the College and Career Readiness standards. Here are 7 basic life skills to learn for college readiness.

MAP Growth

MAP Growth is a computerized adaptive test that helps teachers, parents, and administrators improve learning for all students and make informed decisions to promote a child’s academic growth. It is a comprehensive assessment that focuses on tracking the growth of students in grades K-12 through the school year. Though the test is untimed, each subject takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. The computer-adaptive assessment is aligned with the Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. MAP GROWTH is part of the MAP Suite, which also contains MAP Skills.

LOTE

The LOTE Comprehensive exam assesses students’ proficiency at Checkpoint B of the NY State Education Department’s learning standards for Languages Other Than English.

On the LOTE Comprehensive exam, students are required to:

  • Have conversations in the language being tested
  • Listen to the test administrator speak in the language being tested and answer multiple-choice questions
  • Read a text in the language being tested (for example, a menu or poem) and answer multiple-choice questions
  • Write two essays in the language being tested.

MCAT

The Medical College Admissions Test, commonly known as the MCAT, is a standardized examination used in the United States and Canada to assess the knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities of individuals aspiring to pursue a career in medicine. The MCAT is a crucial component of the medical school admissions process and is typically taken by students who have completed or are close to completing their undergraduate degrees and are planning to apply to medical schools

Since GED is an alternative to a high school diploma. It is highly recommended that you prepare for it. You will receive a test score vouching for your high school knowledge equivalency and college readiness. Obtaining Your GED offers better chances of furthering your education. Here is the ultimate guide for college readiness. Take advantage of this College Readiness – Preparation For The Future: A Senior Boot Camp to access various skills to learn and improve upon them.

MORE THINGS ABOUT PREPARING FOR EXAMS

Take Notes on the Course Readings

You should also review these notes daily. Again, create visual enhancements when possible (e.g., compare/contrast charts, timelines, etc.). Use both your course notebook and, therefore, the text’s margins to record valuable information. Please see our entries on reading for further information on this topic.

Make Sure to Get Plenty of Sleep

Sleeping hours are often the time once we completely synthesize information, especially topics we’ve covered a few hours before bedtime. You want to be as fresh as possible and ready to engage your memory once you take the exam fully. Also, don’t stop exercising or taking time for yourself, even at the final exam time.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Have any questions about Test prep?

Contact us! or Hit the chat button on the right!

How long does it take on average to get ready for the SHSAT and ISEE tests?
The most successful students take up to 4-6 months of weekly sessions, Summertime sessions double up to address both ELA and Math advanced topics before school starts: this helps the student build stamina to sit through long passages and develop key test taking strategies that are centered around how the child learns best. The toughest topics are taught in the summer.
Can you do one set of tutoring that meets the needs of both the SHSAT and ISEE tests - or do you need separate prep for each one?
They can be accomplished at the same time. ISEE requires more topics that have to be covered in Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning and its usually taken at a later date than SHSAT ( two months apart).
What do you think of interview prep services for high school application interviews? Worth the money?
Yes, it helps the student build the confidence needed and the appropriate language and word choice/ vocabulary to use when responding to questions such as  1. Tell me a little bit about yourself, 2- Why do you think you’re a good candidate for this school? 3- What are some of your strengths/weaknesses 4- What is your best quality that makes you stand out from the rest  5- What is the last book you read and how can you apply some of the themes in the book to your real-life 6- Why do you want to come to this school? What can we offer you that another school can’t?  7- Can you tell me about a time when you felt that something didn’t go your way and how you responded to that situation?  8- Do you have any questions for me (which 100% the student should have 3 questions ready to ask the interviewer).
Most students that interview really well have already structured thoughtful and meaningful responses because they’re practiced a whole lot. Students that don’t do well freeze up, never answer the question, respond using colloquial language, and are patiently waiting for the interview to be over. It’s apparent to the interviewer if the student matches the individual presented on the application.

My son loves his tutor, Alissa. He can’t wait until his next session. We wish we could have started him with your services earlier.

-Aderonke A.

We were very pleased with Susan’s services. Her communication with my husband and myself was excellent. Most importantly, my son did not mind working with her. I am also thrilled to share that my son received a High Pass on the Regents and earned a 95 in Algebra this semester.

Maureen K.

My son, a junior in a private high school worked, with a wonderful tutor from Themba to get ready for his SATs. I spoke with Blythe and she asked detailed questions about my sons strengths and weaknesses. She put me in touch with Don, who worked beautifully with my son. Don immediately understood where my son needed help and focused their time together on specific areas of need. He also recognized my sons strengths ( math )and was able to accelerate his understanding in those areas. My sons score jumped 190 points! The individualized instruction he got from Themba and Don was amazing! I highly recommend these wonderful people.

-Marie W.

Alissa is an amazing professional and person! Our entire family loves and appreciates her. My son got considerably better at test-taking for the SHSAT. Thanks so much!

-Roshelle B.

Matt tutored my son for the SAT & ACT this fall We liked his positive approach to help learn the necessary testing skills. He is friendly, thoughtful and points out strengths while emphasizing areas that need extra work. Thank you for sending him to us!

-Colleen Donohue

Having been through the SAT/ACT tutoring process before with my older daughter, I knew we d need something less conventional, more tailor-made, for my son–someone who could adjust and meet the needs of my son s specific learning needs. My son has ADHD and easily becomes overwhelmed and anxious with regards to test-taking. After his first tutoring session with Dr. Brooke, we knew it was a “good fit . She was able to quickly develop a great working rapport with my son. She understood that he needed to be gently challenged, praised and continually encouraged to keep him from becoming overly frustrated. His original PSAT score was a 26. Dr. Brooke helped him to bring his ACT score up to a 31. We can’t thank her enough!

-Hilary V.

We are incredibly grateful to Alissa for everything she has done. Our son scored 536 and has an offer from his top school.

-R.B.
