Why “Themba”?

Themba means trust in Swahili — and trust is central to how we work. We begin by deeply understanding each student’s needs, drawing from parent insight, school feedback, academic history, learning profile, and student goals to create a thoughtful match and a clear plan. You’re partnering with a structured academic performance firm built for demanding academic environments. You are partnering with a structured academic performance firm built for demanding academic environments. A Plan for Your Child

At Themba Tutors, we help students manage their workload, improve follow-through, and build stronger habits around organization and planning. Every child learns differently, so we tailor tutoring and executive function coaching to meet each student where they are.

Our goal is to help students develop simple, reliable systems and structure so assignments feel more manageable and school feels less overwhelming. Over time, we help students build confidence and independence in how they approach their schoolwork.

Home

Weekly Progress Updates for Parents

We keep parents informed every step of the way. After sessions, you’ll receive updates that explain what your child worked on, how they are progressing, and what we are focusing on next. These updates help families stay aligned while reinforcing academic accountability, improving follow-through, and supporting better workload management at home.

Home

Collaboration with Teachers

When possible, we work alongside classroom expectations by helping students stay organized, keep track of assignments, and complete work on time. Our tutors reinforce what students are learning in school while helping them strengthen organization and planning skills so they don’t feel overwhelmed by growing academic demands.

Home

Working as a Team

Our tutors and coaches have experience working in independent, charter, private, and public schools throughout New York City. When helpful, we also collaborate with psychologists, therapists, and other professionals to support each student’s overall growth. Together, we focus on helping students maintain follow-through while building consistent systems and structure that support long-term success.

Our Commitment to Precision and Fit

At Themba Tutors, our work is rooted in trust — reflected in the Swahili word “Themba.” Strong academic performance begins with structured support, clear expectations, and consistent follow-through.
Under the leadership of Craig Selinger, our team operates with a structured, performance-centered methodology and a flexible engagement model designed to support sustained academic stability.
We carefully match each student with a tutor whose expertise aligns with their academic demands, learning profile, and performance goals.
If alignment is not immediate, we recalibrate promptly. Our priority is securing the right academic partnership — whether within Themba Tutors or, when appropriate, through our trusted professional network. Sustained performance requires precision in fit.

EXECUTIVE FUNCTION & PERFORMANCE SYSTEMS

Executive function skills — including planning, monitoring, execution, and working memory — directly impact academic performance. Through our structured academic performance systems and executive function coaching, we strengthen these systems within subject instruction to support sustained attention, cognitive flexibility, and goal-directed persistence across reading, writing, math, testing, and daily coursework.
